im generally up till 2ish bmt time so whenever
i'm so down for private messaging, i'm tired of logging on and seeing someone else logged on but having no immediate way of communicating with them.
sorry, now that i read my last message, i feel like i was complaining too much.
maybe just ignore that last message and instead "i'm so down for private messaging".

Well on the way to the unknown
irc channel anyone?
that'd be cool, i've got a "spare" freebsd machine if you can deal with cable speed hosting.

Speed isn't *too* much of an issue with IRC. I have a spare 500MHz box running Open 3.9 that I'd be willing to donate to the cause.
db: all it takes is aim.. most of us are on aim regularly.
but expect ttf instant messaging by the end of the year (i know this seems long but my semester is booked).
vent?
in lieu of the im function of ttf i'm offering up my freebsd box to whomever would like to set it up. it's online now and i'd create ssh accounts and holes in my firewall if anyone wants to take a shot at it.
i could do it if noone else knows how
takes like 2 minutes without services

I haven't fooled with FreeBSD in a while, but I could set it up tomorrow or this weekend for everyone.

so i'm gonna make a private messenging function, and i'll evolve it into an ajax chat over time.
here's my initial plan: there will be a link in the right sidebar box "private msgs." on that page, you can send pms and look at your archive of old pms. when you send a pm, it's just like a private thread--there's a subject and a message, but you only send it to one person. when you type in the person's name to send it to, ttf will attempt to autocomplete the name (just like what gmail does when you begin to type in an email address you've used before.) when you recieve a pm, a notification box will pop up on the right side. eventually, i will slickery it up with some ajax.
here's the autocompletion software i might use temporarily (i need to learn js/ajax myself if i'm gonna continue working on ttf):

hrm, i really need ajax so this can scale well. because to do this without ajax, i'd have to load the entire user list into the pm page. but if i used ajax, as soon as a letter is typed, a query is sent trying to match the letter, significantly limiting the returned results.

um.. they pretty much have what i want right here:
http://demo.script.aculo.us/ajax/autocompleter_customized
i wish this was in PHP and not RoR. oh well, ttf will get there (eventually.)
db: how would you feel about running a svn server on that box?

i'm itchin for some ajax
ok the hdd on beastie is down so all projects slated are also down.
i'll replace it when i get some cash, probably on my next paycheck.
