Well on the way to the unknown
Well I am finally sick of LFS. I never did get jalfs working, so I just started doing it by hand. Three days later and I am not sure if the darn thing will work anyway. So enough of it. I want an installable system again, so Gentoo here I come. I think gentoo will provide the installablity and package management I want, but the power of having done it myself.

On a side note, one of the LFS devs also got fed up (for a different reason) and started DIY Linux: http://www.diy-linux.org/ I might have to try this bad boy out. But much later. ;)

So now I ask the question, which window manager? I am down to two choices:

E: http://www.enlightenment.org/

Flux: http://fluxbox.sourceforge.net/

Has anyone had these? How are they on resources? Ease of use? Customizability? General feel? Thanks in advance.

it's not bad, esp. if you're coming from lfs. just be prepared to reinstall the second you get everything working so that you can actually begin to tune the system.

lr: "and why did you choose gentoo over debian, hess?"

I have used Debian and only played a little in gentoo. So that was a huge push. Also I think gentoo is closer to the final system I am hoping to build. One requirement was some package management, mostly for upgrades. With debian, apt overwrites your configs if you upgrade (or so i have been told by the man that introduced me to linux). So that turned me off.

oh and I am going to try E. Never had it and the main dev provided some test results that hinted that E DR17 was going to be faster than most other popular window managers. In fact, flux was near the bottom of the list. http://www.rasterman.com/index.php?page=News Scroll to 29 May 2005.

I think db gets it. I wanted more power and control than debian. And he is also right that after this Stage3 install I am going to do a Stage1 that will take much much longer. But thank you all for your input and I will keep ypu updated.

PS Hopefully this guy can also be our IRC server. We shall see....

a lot of these bros are in chat.taucher.net #bsd frequently..

i hope to have a pm feature done within a month, and a full ajax chat by the end of the year.

speaking of bros, ttf is like 100% bros. there's a lot of registered people that may be girls, but the only person registered that i know is female is cac (http://www.thinktankforums.com/profile.php?user_id=22).

Ok linux is just not my friend. I finally got gentoo installed after 3 trys. I just did the minimum and am going to use portage to install more. First on the list, my wireless. I hate tripping over the cable. Then X, still going to use E. I am sure sound works, but I have no way of checking that currently.

Before I can do anything however I need to finish a midterm and a couple homework assignments. Why is there never enough time to do everything I _want_ to do? I just squeeze in everything I _have_ to do, but only just.

that's the main reason i'm not currently running a bsd on my x60s.. not enough time to get it running while balancing school.

I saw an old man reading Linux magazine today on the train, I was 1 second away from striking up a wild conversation and then he put on his headphones.
