so i bought a wd 60gb passport external hdd at best buy for $50!

i loaded it up with everything, then i have trouble accessing it. so i run chkdsk from the cli, and it "fixes" it. no files remained, just 20+gb of shit in a found000 folder. ran chkdsk a few more times and each time it found more file fragments.

so i ran the wd diagnotics. the quick scan failed almost immediately. so i ran the extended test. it claims that it fixed the bad sectors. so i wrote zeros to the entire drive; it worked. then i formatted it with fat32. this sucked, though, because i wanted to do a full format, but the windows cli format program can only format up to 32gb partitions. so i had to use a wd utility that only supports a quick format.

i loaded the drive up with my backup files again. we'll see if it crashes again. :/

nice reliable backup disk, huh?

I don't know if I want to get that thing..it's on newegg for $70 right now. it seems so kickass other than the problems you mentioned.

Actually, after looking at your recent screenshot larz, I noticed your battery was low. I was going to say that this might be the cause but with that windows power manager you can still have like 30% and have that icon looking like it's super low. Is the disk entirely screwed this time?

probably just more bad sectors and all the data lost

i kinda like the looks of this:

i just gotta remember that this passport only cost me $50. assuming it works this time, it was worth it.

got my new wd passport 60gb (5400rpm, malaysia).

so it comes in a full retail package, so i'm assuming that it's new. i pull it out and notice that it comes with a couple scratches. cool. stick it in a cotton sock to protect it until i get a case.

i hook it up to my computer and start throwing files on it. suddenly it turns off. then windows says that a usb device exceeded the power limit on the bus. so i go to the windows dialog to reset the usb port. i plug the drive into another port, and immediately upon plugging it in, windows says "device exceeded usb power limit." so i reset, and try my third port. immediately, i get the same error again.

what a joke. what do i do? my usb ports still work for other devices.

so apparently they want me to buy a cable that uses two usb ports to power it. :(

weird, I've never even heard of a cable like that.

this thing sounds like a POS.

haha.. yeah.

well it requires 650mA and my usb ports only supply 500mA each. which begs the question: why did my last one work fine on here, and why does dp's work fine on his thinkpad?

i'm gonna go test it on a desktop and pray that it doesn't work there either so i can RMA it again, get a new-in-box passport, and sell it on ebay for $50.

what a waste of time

so i took it to work and plugged it into my desktop computer and.. it didn't power on at all! not even a message about a "usb power surge" from windows. so i guess the drive is simply dead. i got an rma and will ship it back tomorrow.

so now i'm in the maket for an external usb drive. i'm considering buying a wd 12gb passport from costco, but i don't know if i want to risk the same problems.

s/12gb/120gb

so after reading a bunch of review that say that their 120gb died, and after my experience, i don't think i want to take my chances. plus, i hate how the drive scratches so easily (even though it feels eally solid.

i'm thinking this:

i should get the lacie external drive tomorrow.

i got scared after reading a bunch of reviews saying that their lacie external drive died on them and that lacie uses maxtor drives. but then i realized that maxtor doesn't make 2.5" form factor drives, so my portable external cannot have a maxtor in it. hopefully it works and never dies.

i retract that statement.. i guess maxtor actually does produce 2.5" drives. :( :( :(

yeah, it's pretty nicely built, and it came with a power sharing cable.

so far it's working well.

power sharing meaning a cable that does power over usb, or something else?

yeah, it has an additional cable that connects to the dc power jack on the drive and to a usb port on your computer in case the drive uses more power than one usb port can provide.

maybe i'll buss' pics.

just took a while on the "creating partition map" step in Disk Utility but after that it seems all right. just copied a gig or so to it.
