so... after ~10 years of a pack a day. I finally quit smoking on December 1st. Never gone longer than 3 days until now. i know its a bit early for the claim, but i haven't even had a slight urge since day 2.
i took welbutrin for 3 weeks before i quit and im still taking it for about another month. definitely couldn't have quit without it. i've been eating insane amounts of food and i have way more energy than i ever had.
i can't even remember myself as a non-smoker. i definitely feel cleaner. and the smell of cigarettes on other people makes me nauseous now... smells way different than when you smoke yourself.
just wanted to tell someone.
sounds pretty awesome. hope it continues to work out.
i'm quitting by the 18th. however, i don't know what "quitting" means for me. i haven't decided if it allows for a cigarette with a glass of wine or not.

actually lucas.. i forgot to mention that another huge factor in me quitting was the fact that you cant drink on the medicine im taking. and not in a sense like xanex or vicodin, where you get a little more fucked up and its fine. i drank on this stuff and went in to depression for 2 days over thanks giving. it sucked bad. so thats kept me from drinking, which in turn helped a ton with not smoking. before, soon as a drop of alcohol touched my lip i would start choke-slamming people for a cigarette. :)
:D
grats, you will thank yourself later in life.
i learned how to roll a decent cigarette this weekend

Fair enough.
I roll my own. Occasionally I'll smoke a pre-made cigarette, if I'm in a hurry and on the bike, but mostly I just roll Bali Halfzware Shag in Rizla+ Silver papers. Bali + Rizla ftw.
I quit smoking last October ... It was easier than I thought it would be ... Relatively painless ...
i wouldn't consider myself a cigarette smoker, i don't even inhale - i'm an occasional cigar & pipe smoker.

My dad came home from work one day and goes man fuck smoking. 25 years of smoking and just one day he quit. Everyone thought he coughed up blood. I don't know what happened. I asked him once and he said it was the cigarette tax in Texas that was killing him. Who knows? Either way Maple, if you relapse we're not gonna say shit. It's tough beating an addiction. But from the sounds of it, that is mighty impressive that you did it.
I do enjoy the occasional cigarette, but then again, my philosophy is, if you are going to smoke, smoke something WORTH smoking ... You know what I mean.
texas has a cigarette tax? :(
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
Yeah, it's pretty impressive. It's nearly $5 a pack (after taxes).
in norway it's more like $15 a pack

Lucas, it's basically a "sin" tax. Funny how lottery tickets aren't "sinful"

I am spending too much money on cigarettes. I go through a pack in like 3 days. thing is, I have no motivation to quit beside saving money. I think I'm going to try to ration myself down to a pack a week.

3 cigarettes per day starting tomorrow morning. 21/week, one more than a pack.

there's actually a current unpassed bill somewhere at the state level that involves banning smoking in all multi-family residences, including on your porch or something. it's not like up for a vote in the state senate or anything right now, I think it's just in some committee. but still, gives you an idea. a guy who frequented the library when I worked there was really active in anti-anti-smoking stuff and used to come into the library to send emails to editors of periodicals. I had a conversation with him on my break once and he talked about how anti-smoking propaganda has stigmatized smokers and also impacted lower-income people disproportionately.

I'm conflicted. it's actually been pretty easy to quit. granted it's only been four days. I don't feel irritable or like I crave a cigarette. but I kind of want one because I still enjoy smoking. I wonder if I'm capable of smoking like one cigarette every few days. I think if I have a pack I won't have that discipline though. maybe the solution is rolling my own? or just saying fuck it and not smoking at all, which is probably the best idea.
i love smoking too. i restrict myself to pipes (i own two), and probably smoke only a few times a year (generally in the summer). no inhalation.

Two of my friends just quit and my roommate is now one day into trying, which makes me wonder...is this a pre-new-years-resolution thing, or do you all just hate standing outdoors when it's cold?
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
I actually prefer smoking when it's cold. smoking when it's hot outside is the worst.
my quitting is because of a couple things. I was thinking about doing it as a new year's resolution anyway (even though I never do resolutions), and then my mom found out I'd been smoking for a while and was bummed out. then I thought about it and there really isn't any good justification for it, so no more!
I quit smoking on a late Saturday evening, I was out of cigs, it was raining, and didn't want to go outside to fetch some from the store.
I figured that was as good as a time as any to quit.

Apparently, health insurance through my work provides free "tobacco cessation" drug coverage. Have any of you who have health insurance and want to quit smoking looked into this?? Am I just out of the quit smoking loop or is this as great and unusual as it seems?
asemisldkfj

phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
Home Depot offers that as well. Friend of mine had to quit because of early signs of COPD and THD gave him free patches and gum for as long as he needed.
I recently challenged myself to no coffee and no cigarettes for 30 days. It was really great. I rediscovered my love for tea and random walks. I've obviously began smoking again, I might start rolling my own. We have a really awesome tobacconist in town and getting custom blended tobacco is really nice.

That article was great, Nestor! I've picked up smoking occasionally. I've been against smoking most of my life, but the social aspects of it are pretty massive. It has been a great experience for me so far, and I don't really feel addicted. I smoke maybe 1 every day to 2 days, and they are all hand rolled, which is pretty much the standard in NZ.
yeah, just keep it below a couple cigarettes per day, in the good european tradition.
most (all?) negative health effects are dose-dependent, so smoking a bit won't harm too much.
but, it's a
very slippery slope. only heroin is more
addictive than nicotine. tread with caution.
