dont do it oz!
damn. i love my p3 laptop 500mhz with 256 of ram.
i'm not impressed with the 20ms lcd. you should get 4-8ms.

the law is no protection
thing probably only does like 1280x1024, too. sorry for shitting on your new monitor :).
further research shows that the lcd is a pva, which gives it a 1000:1 contrast ratio. that's why it costs $300.

I was happy with my Dell Latitude XPi until the display died this weekend. Looks like I'll be getting a new computer as well!

Do you game Larz? 20 ms is alright for desktop applications.
i'm not the one buying the monitor. dsplitt is, and i figured 4-8ms would better suit him.

yeah the new monitor is 5ms. Almost bought a 37'' when i was ordering the rest of my shit cause it was only like $550 or so. too bad i have to feed myself the next few months or else that 37'' would have been mine.

Help build my new computer!
I want something that's pretty nice to use, look at, and touch. I don't need gimmicky bullshit marketing features. I'm looking for an efficient computer that's reasonably priced but fairly customized to my needs. I set a budget of $1000 for the entire computer.
Most modern processors will be fast enough but I would like the CPU to support hardware virtualization. I don't want to go with the lowest price in this area however. I decided to go with Athlon for the price-performance combo.
The motherboard will barely exceed the minimum requirements. I need it to have standard audio, ps2, >=4x usb, 1 or 2 gigabit eth, >=2x sata 6gb/s, 1x pata, and fit the remainder of my components.
As for the keyboard, I know it costs more than my CPU, but it has a special appeal. I want a high quality input device. I always use my computer, and it's no longer the time to stick to laptops for my main computing purposes. I'm ready to use a full keyboard -- even though my thinkpad keys have treated me the best they can on a laptop. I spend more time on my computer than I spend in my car or in my home. I want it to be fucking awesome when I type.
As for housing I want a simple case. I don't need to touch it or look at it much. I want to plug stuff into it, that's pretty much all I need to do with it. I would like it to be as unobtrusive as possible, both visually and acoustically. I don't intend on spending a lot on quiet fans at this time.
I am getting a graphics card for one reason: Starcraft 2. I don't watch TV, or have a lot of spare time, but when I want to relax I prefer to play this strategy game. This is the only thing on the computer purchased solely for the game. The keyboard is not very great for gaming, but standard typing.
Lastly the monitor. I will treat my eyes to some quality pixels. I WANT ANGLES -- viewing angles and pivot angles. I've been interested in 90 degree pivot web surfing for a while. I can't wait for a monitor of a size so unwieldy that it cannot be folded into a backpack.
Here's a list of stuff to buy by price:
Monitor $290 -- Viewsonic (Try to find a monitor<23" IPS w/pivot)
Keyboard $150 -- Filco (blue switch)
CPU $140 -- AMD Phenom II X4 965
Motherboard <$100 -- Haven't found one I like yet
Case $90 -- LIAN LI Mid Tower
GPU $65 -- ATI Radeon HD 4670
PSU $60 -- ~620Watt based on
RAM $40 -- CORSAIR XMS 4GB DDR3 (depends on mobo, but aiming for a 4GB corsair stick)
HSF $? -- No clue which to get
Any suggestions, recommendations, biases, expletives, mistresses you'd like to share? Thanks everyone, this has been bugging me for a while.

Either wait for the new AMD bulldozer CPU's, or get an Intel Sandy bridge CPU.
> Either wait for the new AMD bulldozer CPU's, or get an Intel Sandy bridge CPU.
Yes, definitely do this.
They're expensive. I don't know how they perform in comparison to the Phenom. This is a comparable priced product, but it seems quite a bit slower, is it?:
Intel Core i3-2100T Sandy Bridge 2.5GHz $135

Versus:
AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz $139
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?It … 6819103727
Just to give you some perspective I'm used to a Core 2 Duo with 6 gigs ram on my T61, and my last desktop was a 550 Mhz Pentium 3.
> They're expensive. I don't know how they perform in comparison to the Phenom.
They're faster & more energy efficient.
Get a i5 2400 or something, yeah, it's a bit more expensive, but very much worth the extra 50 bucks.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?It … -_-Product
The 2100T you posted is a slightly slower & more energy-efficient version of the 2100 (35W TDP vs 65W TDP), it's also a dual core.
The Phenom 2 X4 965 uses a whopping 125W!
So not only will it use more power, it'll also means more cooling meaning more noise (And faster dust buildup).
Also, less pwoer == beter for the energy Bill. Not sure how much this will amount to though (TDP is not the same as energy usage, real-world power usage is difficult to calculate and depends on what you're doing).
Again, new AMD CPU's are going to hit the market really soon:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AMD_FX_microprocessors
So if you must have AMD, wait at least a few more weeks!
I suspect AMD will be releasing more CPU's later in the year, those will probably be the better price/quality CPU's whereas these seem more performance-oriented.
Oh that one seems more reasonable. I'd definitely consider the i5. Thanks for pointing that out :)
> The Phenom 2 X4 965 uses a whopping 125W!
holy shit. my entire file server + switch + router pulls less than 100W.

my phenom x6 is quite speedy.

well, TDP != actual power usage
those power ratings are tdp? so it's just a measure of heat generation?
It's the amount of heat the cooling is supposed to dissipate.
It's a bit of a fuzzy metric and not very strictly defined.
See:

i saw that page, thus my disgust.
