i'm having trouble deciding on a file system for my two storage drives. i *really* want to avoid using FAT, so i'm thinking ext2. I found some SF ext2 utility for mac and i know that there is ext2 support for windows. i wonder why apple doesn't ship os x with native ext2 support.
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
yeah, I've resorted to ext2fs before. it kinda sucks since I need third party tools for every OS I use to access ext2, but it seemed a better option than FAT. if you're just going between Windows and OS X, there are some pretty okay HFS+ tools for Windows. if you go that route, let me know and I'll see if I can locate the one that I've used in the past.
Are you talking about MacDrive? I would use that but demonoid only has v6 and I don't have fifty US bucks to throw at access I can get for free using ext2.
I found something called MacOpener... I'm gonna check that out.
why is ext2fs better than fat32?
the windows software for ext2fs seemed terrible
fat32 doesn't support files over 4gb.
didn't know that was an issue for anyone. i don't even have 4gb free on my hdd! :o
what do you have that's so huge? you do video prod. or something?
hmmm, the biggest files i have are like 3.63 gb. (dvd isos)
maybe i can live with fat.
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
http://hem.bredband.net/catacombae/hfsx.html
that's the one I used on my MacBook under XP to access my HFS+ stuff. it's free and works well enough for me. the drawback is it won't assign it a drive letter so you can't just go to it from My Computer or whatever.
I've used this before too:
http://www.acutesystems.com/scrtm.htm , but it's just a trial version.
i'm thinking i'll just go with fat... i really want drive letter and write support. i don't have any files > 4gb.
but i'm still wondering about ext2.
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
personally, I'd go with FAT just because OS X and Windows both have native support for it. kind of a miserable solution, but the best IMHO.
> kind of a miserable solution
playa, why you hatin'?

What's the default font for Camino?
Is that windows shortcut a VnC shortcut?
Damn I love OSX. :(
that ain't camino. it's firefox. i would run camino but i need foxmarks.
that is to the other bit of my raptor. my windows partition is a guilty pleasure. i should mention this is a hackintosh- no problems whatsoever! it's definitely worth a try if you have new hardware!
asemisldkfj

glad to see you're using Transmission, nestor :). where'd you get the neat hard drive icons? firefox looks nice, too (I use camino.). is that the bookmarks bar next to the address bar or that foxmarks thing you mentioned?
what do you mean by hackintosh?
i made the icons (incl. the windows one). yeah, i'm converting all the mac users i know from ff to camino. the bookmarks bar next to address is just a regular bookmark box. foxmarks syncs my bookmarks over my desktops/OSs and my laptop.
The Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer automatically synchronizes your bookmarks between two or more computers running Firefox. It also lets you access your bookmarks from any computer anytime via my.foxmarks.com. An easy-to-use wizard guides you through the quick startup process. Then Foxmarks works silently in the background to keep your bookmarks up-to-date on all your computers.
hackintosh- running osx on generic hardware (in my case overclocked core 2 duo). i have a perfect install, i'm very rare. most people can't get sound/video/network to work perfectly. i tried it on my tp and power mgmt was brutal- my desktop worked very well (probably comes pretty close to a mac pro in some tasks... dual xeons blow away my conroe though.)

lucas: I'm living vicariously through you at the moment. I was on my way (literally) to buy my new tent, when my car starting acting up. $600 later, I'm near broke and trying to get a savings back together.
damn, sorry to hear that.
but yeah, i'm not homeless anymore. i went about two weeks, and i got sick of putting up my tent every night. plus it started snowing and getting really cold, and i didn't have a sufficient mummy bag. i bumped into a girl at a bar that i knew, and she told me that she wanted me to live with her. so i told her that i would for a couple months. one week after i moved in with her, i get a call from grad housing, telling me that they have a room ready for me. last i talked to them, i was #60 on the list! so i was kinda pissed that i didn't hold out for another week and go right into grad housing like i had planned. oh well.
i'll probably try being homeless again in the summer or at some later time. it's kinda fun, but having a place to live saves so much time. i spent an hour a day being homeless (putting up and taking down my tent each day, plus the small commute). i was not looking forward to putting up my tent in rainy/snowy and windy conditions. it would have taken a lot longer. once i had to put it up in a decent wind, and it kinda sucked. it's just not worth it to me when i'm busy.
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
Damn, sorry to hear that. :(
I still plan on being homeless, but as it turns out I'll probably have to wait until April-ish ... because I was never taken off the apartment lease so I have an obligation. *shrug* Not too bad.

leopard 10.5.1 Mac Pro 2.66x4 ati x1900 1gb ram <-- waiting for price drop on aftermarket ram
This is the machine where I do all my very CPU intensive design work, and that doesn't need to be done on the go.
I bought a Macbook Pro this summer due to a summer job I landed that needed a LOT of mobility. It's a santa rosa based 2.2x2 ghz 2gb ram laptop, that, because of the ram, is similar speed to my Mac Pro. I think the ram upgrade for the Mac Pro will happen in the next few months...
Interesting bit about the Mac Pro, since it was purchased in December of last year, is that for the first 4-6 months that apple was building them, there was a problem with the wiring of the Bluetooth and Airport antennas so that the Wifi reception was horrible and the bluetooth reception was so bad that the keyboard input was laggy and the mouse was unusable. I found a lot of people with the problem, but after ridiculous amounts of search I found short 1-2 sentances of people who fixed it. I ended up having to do a bit of sleuthing and work on my own, but to my knowledge I have the most complete information and solution to this problem on the internet (note: there are probably still thousands of these machines out there with this problem).
From what I have heard from a couple sources is that minimum wage workers (probably off in china) are responsible for labeling the Airport and Bluetooth antenna wires on the casem, and there was some miscommunication on which was which (they look exactly the same). Then, when the bluetooth and Airport modules are put in states side by some well paid employee, he attaches ends up attachine mislabeled wires.
http://www.thelocale.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=1298
Here's information on that… been trying to help spread the word, and thought a few people would be interested in it (seen a few mac screenshots). As it is less common, I have still heard of one or two people with recent Mac Pro purchases with this problem (it's actually the most viewed post on my forum… 715 views… ssssh). Apple denies it… but considering that my bluetooth mouse and keyboard were unusable even 1ft away from my computer, and my Wifi constantly dropped… but now after the fix I get better wifi reception than my laptop, and I can use my keyboard and mouse 100% fine in another room—and it's run with this fix for over a year with constant use—i feel that the proof is in the pudding :P

Three video cards, three monitors ... and you only have firefox and IRC open? What do you do that you need three monitors?
sometimes there's gimp, which easily uses two monitors (one for dialogs and one for image). another scenario would be web hacking. one monitor for irc/server side/logs/whatever, one with lots of terminals running vi, and the last one running firefox. the screenshot doesn't show a lot of windows because i wanted to show off the cool wallpaper. i guess i don't *need* three monitors, but it's pretty neat, and i didn't need the monitors and video cards for anything else

don't fonts have to be either aliased or anti-aliased?
sort of... but that's how they are rendered, not how the files are
DaGr8Gatzby
Drunk by Myself
Exactly. you can anti-alias a system font. It doesn't look good though. You'll also get different results depending in the renderer you use.
aliasing is an artifact you get when scaling. anti-aliasing tries to hide the artifact

damnit i want that machine back. i've used a macbook pro or a powerbook as my main machine for the last few years until i decided to give openbsd a go full time. i fell in love and then it broke. i dont even really like using osx for development anymore. was trying to get a similar setup on my mbp wtih a linux distro but they are all shitty.
i mean... in linux there are 3 driver for this wireless card. iwconfig, ifconfig, firewalls, udev, device names, kernel configs, modprobe, the worst fucking docs. its just annoying, overly complex, garbage. like no one plans out anything before they do it.

works perfect. there is really good support on the thinkpads (well, the ones with apm).
after writing that post today and being pissed at linux i remembered that I had a Thinkpad T42 in a closet at my parents house. I went and got that and using it now. Its actually perfect except its 1024x768 which sucks, but it better than no OpenBSD.
I find it wierd that I'd rather use OpenBSD on an old Thinkpad @ lower resolution, slow, smaller drive, less memory than use MacOS X on a (reasonably new) MBP. I'm now using OpenBSD cuz it 'just works'. The world has done a complete switcherooo on me. ;)
With Flash working for everything I need (except last.fm) and sleep/suspend working and all my other software is here I dont have any reasons not to use it any more.

FMOUTPUT=`fetchmail -c`
MESSAGES=`echo $FMOUTPUT | awk '{print $1}'`
READ=`echo $FMOUTPUT | awk '{print $3}' | sed 's/(//'`
UNREAD=`echo $((MESSAGES-READ))`
echo $UNREAD > ~/.unreadtmp
cp ~/.unreadtmp ~/.unread > /dev/null
rm ~/.unreadtmp > /dev/null
that puts my unread mail count in a file. then I just do $(cat ~/.unread) in my xinitrc.

For your sake I hope that "Forcefield Strap On" means something else than what I'm thinking about right now.

In training today, I finally got that stupid Gnome desktop set up properly. WHY WON'T THEY LET ME INSTALL A REAL WINDOW MANAGER?!

Because wmii was pretty much made for exactly what I will be doing. I want it!

HAHA! I laugh at your Gnome Desktop + Spark IM. Searching takes forever in spark. How's HostGator man?
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
I haven't bothered to set up Pidgin to handle the IM yet ... plus I don't have to search yet so it hasn't been a big deal.
It's okay, they're actually going to test me for a linux admin position on Monday, so it may get better (plus a $5/hour pay raise).
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
that is a huge raise.

Pimp them phi_. Let me know what the tests are like. Maybe i'll get bored and go work with you. But eh I highly doubt that about HG. Lol. You should hit up some dude named Lanh. He went to U of H. Pretty nice dude.
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
Thanks, guys!
They really love that I have years of BSD experience, so maybe that'll give me a bit of an edge. I was just wanting to know the process for testing for that position so I could move up to it later. My friend in QA apparently put in a good word for me so they're testing me ASAP. *crosses fingers*
But seriously, why won't they let me install something other than Gnome? They have awesome install, but trying to run it kills the netboot setup for some reason. I'm guessing it got added to the GDM defaults on accident, so the file locations/mount points don't match up. Such a tease...

Gnome 3 isn't too bad.
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
Yes it is.
DaGr8Gatzby
Drunk by Myself
No it isn't. :)
Why do you need to use Gnome? It's just the shapes of the windows that changes, nothing else ... :-/
You can start gnome and then start Xorg a second time with dwm or whatever. "What do you mean, I am running Gnome!" :)
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
They use an overly complicated netboot setup, and they have a lot of binaries restricted, so I couldn't even compile dwm if I wanted.
static binary in your homedir?
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
It is booting from an i686 Ubuntu machine ... I could compile the binary at home and see how that works out...
That's what I do on shared hosts and the like when they're sans-compiler.
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
I already have dwm compiled on my home machine, which is also a 686 GNU/Linux machine, so maybe I can just copy/paste the binary. We'll see!
phi_

Got awesome to work. This'll do. :)
Awesome ;-)
