[19:54] wingedleopard: are you ready for freshies in your face?
[19:55] brian: freshies?
[19:55] wingedleopard: yeah
[19:55] wingedleopard: adding a new ttf feature as we speak
[19:55] wingedleopard: check it!
[19:56] brian: sweet
[19:56] wingedleopard: kinda ridiculous
[19:56] wingedleopard: i've never seen a forum that shows the number of unread threads for each forum
[19:56] wingedleopard: so i just next leveled on the competition
[19:57] brian: is that really that useful though?
[19:57] wingedleopard: dunno
[19:57] wingedleopard: hahahahah
[19:57] brian: maybe an unseen threads count would be more useful
[19:57] wingedleopard: but this is just like triangles
[19:58] wingedleopard: except it's not (0)=no triangle, (more than 0)=triangle
[19:58] wingedleopard: it actually shows the number
[20:00] brian: then why aren't I seeing triangles for forums that have like 50 unanswered threads?
[20:01] wingedleopard: huh?
[20:01] wingedleopard: there aren't triangles/arrows anymore
[20:01] wingedleopard: just freshies
[20:01] brian: :(
[20:01] wingedleopard: what?
[20:01] wingedleopard: you want freshies and arrows?!
[20:01] brian: but those are a count of ALL unread threads
[20:02] wingedleopard: truth
[20:02] brian: am I supposed to keep track of what the numbers are and see if they go up when I refresh ttf?
[20:02] wingedleopard: no
[20:02] wingedleopard: you're supposed to read all threads
[20:02] wingedleopard: :P
[20:02] brian: unless the number was like
[20:02] brian: how many threads have been made since I viewed a forum
[20:02] wingedleopard: so you don't like freshies in your face
[20:02] brian: lol
[20:02] brian: exactly, and I don't want to
[20:02] brian: if freshies = new threads since I last viewed a forum
[20:02] brian: then yeah I'm into them
[20:03] brian: unread threads just doesn't give me anything
[20:03] wingedleopard: okay, okay, this is the problem i foresaw but ignored
[20:03] wingedleopard: well some people like me and dp read all threads
[20:03] wingedleopard: dbrown suggested this
[20:03] wingedleopard: guess i fucked up
[20:03] brian: yeah, I don't think everyone will read all threads
[20:04] brian: you could have both all unread threads and new threads since last viewing a forum
[20:04] wingedleopard: he doesn't like it when he goes to a forum and reads some threads (but not all) and the forum is marked as read even though there are threads chillin' still
[20:05] wingedleopard: ok
[20:05] brian: I like that, because if I don't read them the first time around, chances are I just looked at the subject and decided not to. I don't need reminding later, it's not like my e-mail inbox or something..
[20:05] wingedleopard: i'll do both
[20:05] wingedleopard: hrm
I miss the black triangles and how they worked.
yeah, there's triangle advocates and freshie advocates.
triangle advocates like their method because they don't want to read all threads; they just like an indicator of whether there are new posts in a forum since their last visit.
freshie advocates like their method because they typically read all threads, but not always in one sitting. so they like to know if they have unread threads, regardless of their last visit.
i'll put the triangles back and we'll have both. this may also become a user-selectable feature. also, if freshie users so desire, there may be a "mark as read" or "mark all as read" feature.
The 'mark all as read' feature would be nice, and if freshies != 0 then put a black triangle

mark all as read would be nice.
I don't read every thread, so it sucks having to open up every forum to see if there are any new threads. bring back the triangles!
So people have a pretty different number of threads read and unread. What if there were a system to slightly encourage the reading of threads? Freshies as they are now don't really give me the incentive to get back to zero since it looks sorta weird to see all forum sections zeroed out. The triangles sort of give you the instant visual satisfaction that it's there waiting to be looked at, and when you have the forum is normalized.
What about instead of freshies as it's own column, have triangles, plus posts in this form: 1/921 where 1 is the unread.

the law is no protection
that's not a bad idea, dp. I just don't want to feel like I have to read every thread. because I won't do that.
you can at least click them though and see if you really don't want to read them :p tons of threads are better than their titles!
asemisldkfj

when are the arrows coming back! I don't like reading ttf without arrows. a 'mark all as read' feature would be neat, now that I think about it. and just have triangles when you haven't either read all threads in a forum or clicked 'mark all as read.' is this what you were saying, dp? I don't feel like reading this thread again.
:P
just reverted index.php and style.css to r86

yay, arrows :D.
are the freshies coming back?
aww there will always be room in my heart for freshies...
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
they'll be back, hopefully.
they will be back with a "mark forum as read" feature, and user-selection of freshies/arrows/both.
what the fuck is up with freshies?
in my general and tech list, there is a single freshie in each and I can't get it back to zero! I clicked on every thread to get it back and nothing is working..
is this the insanity freshie in action?
sadface.
yeah, i have one in general and one in tech...
click next page all the way to the end
people made threads with the intention of searching, so i archived all of the posts in the thread, moving it to the end of the list.
:)
thanks

All we need is customized freshies.
we need lots of things :(
ok so i remember an idea...
i think it was over the phone where larz and i were talking about ajax, but it went like this:
you open
thinktankforums.com the page loads, then preloading occurs:
every forum section begins caching the page coming next..beginning with those with freshies..
so when you click the forums and then the posts with freshies they load even quicker than before!
as if ttf wasn't fast enough :o
ok i forgot what i had to add to that..too many interruptions.
sometimes the freshy looks like it is someone else's post, sometimes i know the freshy is mine.
the uncertainty keeps me coming back
number of freshies: 1593

You could add a "freshy bar". A sort of status bar that keeps track of your progress at eliminating freshies.
It would also be nice to have a special freshies list that keeps track of the freshies that are in the threads that you have already posted as opposed to those which you only viewed.
i use to zero my freshies every day
i wish you could 'catch up' and zero your freshies automatically
fuck automation
> i use to zero my freshies every day
:O really?
> i wish you could 'catch up' and zero your freshies automatically
i want to make this.
I like the idea. I didn't see a thread for it so I will just mention it here. It would be nice if when you are finished typing in your post you could hit tab which would select the "click to post" button then hit space or enter to post.
yes
> It would be nice if when you are finished typing in your post you could hit tab which would select the "click to post" button then hit space or enter to post.
that's in the current version.
but do note that with the live version, you can simply shift-tab then enter. :)
nice!

I am not a robot...
There is probably a better place to ask/post this, but...
Lucas: please un-admin me. I feel ridiculous.
I attempted to do it myself, but found (surprise!) I don't have the know-how. Save for banning myself...which I could do, I suppose.
you created a freshy in my face with that post
relevant enough for me
haha

i don't think your number is accurate, what's up with that? you should be grabbing the percent that is fresh, not that isn't. also you're using threads instead of posts, freshies live at the post level.
It would also be nice to have a special freshies list that keeps track of the freshies that are in the threads that you have already posted as opposed to those which you only viewed.
possibly

i was gone for a while, one thing that was good is that i built up a pretty good freshie count, which doesn't normally go over maybe 10 for me usually.
number of freshies: 82
number of
posts: 17827
about 0.46% fresh.
<3 freshness
i'm pretty sure freshies are based on threads
^^

... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
We need a freshie-clear function or something. I'm tired of seeing 200+ freshies in the Tech forum. I'm not going to go through and view everything fresh thread.
yeah, i know
it's at the top of the list

I figured. I do like the suicide feature I remember you mentioning from one of your old weblogs. But that's not necessary.
suicide feature?!!
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
Yeah, IIRC it deleted all your posts and user info. Maybe even all references to you ... if not that, suicide 2.0 should do that. Because that would be pretty Stalin-esque its badassery.
but with a suicide feature, it wouldn't be obsessive anymore :/

qft/bump
yeah, if i remember correctly lucas is not a fan of ttf/wlwl suicides...
hence the revision/archive instead of deletion
bsdlite

i read the phrase "suicide" in this and similar threads and honestly have no idea what it means in the context of freshies
i just want some way to get the freshy count to 0 since it's effectively providing no information that the forum thread counts don't already provide (freshies should at least be relative to the user account's creation date, not the forum creation date :/ )
i don't know what it means in the context of freshies.
i am sick of 2000 freshies in my face. is there a freshie flush button or something?
not yet.
i have 84 but i don't want a freshie flush button.
I have 2043 and it's pretty annoying :P

I hate freshies.
a forum with new posts should just have an arrow or something next to it
1 hour later and i am down to 1 mysterious freshie in general.
can't find it?
nope, but my freshie kill script cleared it out

I'm a freshie convert. I used to be "meh" about the whole thing, now I quite enjoy them.
VIVA LES FRESHIES!
