i really don't think many of these approach shoes are for me. a lot of them handle 5th class climbing, and i'm not a climber.
i think i'll ultimately want two pairs:
* trail running or approach shoes
* hiking (backpacking) boots
I went to REI and tried the La Sportiva Cirque Pro's out but my feet were too wide :(
bummer. i wonder if they'd work for me.
They're really cool though besides the fit of my wonky ass feet.
one of my friends has the la sportiva slingshot mountain running shoes; he loves them.
we talked about it and i decided i'd give the approach shoes a try. i just bought:

dp: I hear ya. Wide feet, gravity-defying arches. I mainly stay in the realm of skater shoes for the sake of simplicity.
larz: I'm digging the shoes.
i've done a handful of hiking four-five day trips through algonquin park in the winter. it is fun but hella cold (-15F for all you americans) and you can't pack much.
i really prefer canoeing to hiking. pack lots, cover lots of ground, and it's really relaxing.
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
try a 5 day hike through parts of the grand canyon during the summer. carrying 2 gallons of water per person each day really isnt fun. my parents have done it a lot and the last time they went and group of college kids didnt bring enough water, got dehydrated and had to be air lifted out.
hahaha yeah thats why i hike in canada. there's always a nice clear lake nearby!
i like the shoes i ordered. i'm going with the martini (i just gotta order a 10 instead of the 9.5 i got.)
actually decided against the approach shoes for now.
caitlin and i want to do more trail running, so i got the la sportiva slingshot:

I did a badass hike down in wyoming the other day. went to the top of bald peak and perfect view in all directions, could see for miles.

How much money do you have, larz?!
Also, I'm planning on backpacking this summer. Perhaps in North Texas, such as
Palo Duro .
Opinions?
> How much money do you have, larz?!
well not $25-per-hour-worth, but i have some.. why?
i returned those other shoes.
> Opinions?
let's meet up somewhere and do some real serious expedition shit
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
You always seem to be buying stuff...
When and where, larz? I'll pick up Gatz and we can hold a ttf get-together on a mountain.
i got the mountain running shoes today.. they are awesome. i'm keeping them.
ozntz
toooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
for now
you're right. they might be a bit too big

A bit? I was thinking a byte or so.

haha, phi.
just hiked up and ran down part of a mountain (900')! woo!
i used my 10.5 slingshots, so i guess i'm keeping them. they worked very nicely!
next up on my list is a backpack (internal frame, 2 day). recommendations?
then i'll probably buy an msr hubba hubba (2 man, 3 season tent, ~$250).
I don't know much about backpacks, I have a few dry bags though.
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
shit, if i do any serious multiple day hikes i use my dads old pack from like the 70's. things got like a steel frame that rests on your back but is a fuckin amazing pack. holds everything i need and still holds up great.
Some time in august i may be going on a hike down into the grand canyon to deer falls or something like that. on the way in i guess we are gonna have to hide caches of water along the trail and mark them with a gps so on the way out we can actually survive! haha.
awesome
anyone have experience with deuter bags? i'm looking at their 85 liter bag:
http://www.trailspace.com/gear/deuter/aircontact-75+10/
i'm might just spring for an osprey pack, because i guess they are the real deal.
tents, revisited: i'm looking for a 2-man, 3-season. i'm considering:
sierra designs - lightning -- $250 -- 4lbs, 5oz packed -- 2 poles -- 1 door/vestibule
msr - hubba hubba -- $300 -- 4lbs, 12 oz packed -- 1 pole -- 2 doors/vestibules
thoughts here?
other thoughts:
MSR Mini Works EX Micro filter: $85
Jetboil Personal Cooking System / Coffee Press Bundle: $100
i bought an arc-teryx bora 80 for $375 at a shop a block from my apartment, along with a jetboil and an msr mini-works filter.
so i'm borrowing caitlin's tent (msr hubba hubba).
i got everything packed in the bora except food. i probably have about 10-15 liters of room left. :D

Bringing up dp's wonky-ass feet remark again...
I got professionally sized today to get some good, sturdy walking/hiking shoes. I'm a size 10EEEE. :(
that is wonky-ass.
any recommendations for a high-cut vibram-soled gore-tex hiking boot?
i just bought the black diamond firstlight. it's 2-man 3-season tent, but it should hold up very nicely in mild winter conditions. $209 at the basecamp. while i was there, i got a patagonia crew and two pairs of smartwool socks on the cheap.
\o/
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
ah dude larz you shoulda told me you were gettin that tent at the basecamp. i coulda hooked ya up with a killer discount.
:/ how?
i've kinda accepted paying normal prices on sporting goods and bicycle parts. retail markup is usually around 100%, but that's okay.
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
my mom still does a shit load of inventory for them so she gets everything at cost. plus since she isn't exactly employed by them and she hates the owner she has no problem buying stuff for other people.
it's kinda a long story about my mom and the base camp but still it's pretty amusing in the end.
damn. oh well..
hey chiken are there any bivy sac's that you can get at a discount? i might get one through ya :D
basecamp carries a few. but at the price, you might as well get a tent like mine. it's only 2.5 pounds and offers a lot more protection.
just got a few pieces of marmot mid-weight base layer: leggings, crew top, and zip top. $20 each at barrel mountaineering (a block from my house).
does anyone here have opinions on shells? helly hansen has a pretty nice winter shell for $175 (normally $350).
phi_

Brr... I'm glad I live down here. Where winter is still above 30F.
just bought these on sale:
http://www.zappos.com/n/p/p/7138244/c/764.html
hopefully they will work out for me. do some snowshoeing (and ice climbing?).
getting a backpack for xmas, hopefully a tent from the parental units and i should be good to actually get out there.
want to do some winter camping with me?
once i knock down to part time at q2 i'm in.
chiken.. how do you feel about getting me a mummy bag? possible?
i just got the boots. they ar the most insane things i have ever worn in my life.

i just got the marmot randonnee hardshell goretex pants for $209 at moosejaw! (they are normally $300.)
i just got them. they are amazing.
this post has been archived.
so a friend and me are still on for a march expedition.
what i still need (by priority):
1. boots (44 or 44.5)
2. gloves (shell, liner)
3. balaclava
4. jacket (shell, fleece)
5. msr lightning ascent 30" snowshoes
6. 0degF mummy bag
got some boots.
tomorrow me and a friend are snowshoeing. we're going to try to make it to the bridger ridge on the SW face from middle cottonwood. we'll have to rent shovels and avalanche transceivers.
from my mountaineering book:
"Some people report that the most terrifying part of their avalanche experience was having their air space trampled on as they were being rescued."
the march expedition is off. i haven't been training hard enough, nor do i want to be out in the cold for a week straight.
my updated winter mountaineering want list:
1. gloves (shell, liner)
2. balaclava
3. mountaineering socks
4. jacket (gtx shell, polartec fleece)
5. msr lightning ascent 30" snowshoes
6. 0degF mummy bag
i won't be getting any of this stuff anytime soon. i'll try to hit up end-of-season sales so i'm ready for next year.
as far as summer mountaineering is concerned, i want:
1. traditional leather boots
2. mountaineering socks
3. climbing gear
thank god summer boots are so much cheaper than stiff winter boots!
bump
So I am planning on getting a pack for backpacking this summer (for my bday). I will probably be using it for 2-3 day trips, I'm thinking around 4000 cu. Any advice on brands or deals? I figured db might have some info since it sounded like he got a pack not to long ago.
my advice on brands:
1. arc'teryx
2. osprey
osprey is nice because they mold the hip belt to your body. but realize that the drawback to this is that if you wear more/less clothing, it may affect the hip belt's fit. also, it will suck for other people to use the pack.
i don't know about deals. i think they are scarce at this time of year (except for winter gear).
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
osprey are badass packs
mold the hip belt ... so you go into somewhere such as the base camp and they fit your waste or something?
yeah. they heat up the hip belt then mold it to you.
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
couldn't it even be possible to just wear it and have the heat generated by your body heat it up and have it mold to you that way?
no, because they heat it up pretty hot. just like when you have ski boots molded, i think they go over 150degF.
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
i molded my ski boots by wearing them.........
so then maybe you're right
all i know is that a guy working at a store said that they heat them up around 150degF.
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
yeah that sounds right, and your probably right, since the backpack would move around a bit while hiking there is the chance it wouldn't mold right so the safest bet would be to do it in a store.
After a lot of searching here is the pack I think im going with
http://www.backcountrygear.com/catalog/packdetail.cfm/OS128
that's a pretty nice pack, and light too. :)
damnit, last week moosejaw had 15% off all climbing gear. why the fuck didn't i buy a helmet and a harness?

good question larz
half-price coupon for

When does that coupon expire?
My winter gear (all in new or near new condition):
1. A pair of DAKINE Medium Black Scout Gloves with liners Black
2. HOT Chillys upper body men's medium long sleeved polyester/spandex base layer Black
3. A pair of Salomon thinsulate size 10.5 boots rated for -20 c or -4 f Black

Winter gear I could use:

I am most concerned about getting a good jacket. I don't know when the best times to buy would be. Now, or wait for fall sales.

so this is why you want to go to the patagonia outlet sale.
get a full goretex shell (either marmot, arcteryx, or patagonia). then just get some cheap polartec fleece layer for inside.

nothing is wrong - what are you scared of?
what day?
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
how bout the 1st. i've got absolutely nothin goin on except a hike to twin lakes this sunday.
i'd certainly go. can i invite others?
andyp
nothing is wrong - what are you scared of?
sounds fun
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
yeah that'd be cool. i'll get some more info on the rosebud to rosebud hike and try to get a more definite plan down and post it by monday.
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
so i guess there are a few options on how to do the rosebud to rosebud hike.
1. have two groups, one start at either end. meet at the plateau and exchange keys then meet up at the grizzly bar afterwards to exchange keys again.
2. everyone meet at one end, then carpool to the other.
3. everyone meet at one end, then have someone pick us up on the other end. (my parents have volunteered to do this if we choose to go this route)
in any event, we probably want to get on the trail by 8:30 since it's a 13 mile hike.
also, it might be pretty snowy still. ill be in the beartooths this weekend and see what it's like.
can we go on thursday? otherwise, i'd have to reschedule an appointment. i can reschedule, if necessary.
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
yeah that would be fine.
so there is still a decent amount of snow on the tops of the beartooths but i would still like to attempt it. i'm gonna call the forest service tomorrow and see if they have any more info on the conditions.
andyp
nothing is wrong - what are you scared of?
I can go on pretty much any day just let me know!
i vote for method (2).
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
well i talked to a ranger at the forest service station in red lodge and i guess theres still huge snow drifts 1/4 mile from froze to death plateau on the east rosebud side of the trail. she said she hadn't heard of anyone making it all the way through on that trail yet.
so i guess we could just go up the west rosebud side and see if we can get to the top of froze to death plateau. pretty good views from up there, then if not we can always go up to island lake.
let's just take snow shoes. i can rent us three pairs.
andyp
nothing is wrong - what are you scared of?
my parents have 2 pair
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
alright, you need my shoe size and how much would it cost?
nah, they're all one size. they go over your boots.
if ap can provide for the two of you, i can just rent my own. (fyi, they're $5/day at the
sob.)
andyp
nothing is wrong - what are you scared of?
yeah i can bring them
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
i guess my dad has a pair that i can use.
anyways, so you guys really want to attempt this all the way through hu? well if so, i would feel much more comfortable going from east rosebud to west just for the fact that you can see mystic lake from the top of the plateau and if there is a lot of snow it will make it easier for us to find our way. i don't know the east rosebud side very well so if for some reason we got down at the wrong place because of snow cover it would be a lot tougher getting back on the right route.
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
well i'll just assume we are gonna go all the way.
it's a 13 mile hike so getting on the trail early is pretty important. i will try to get to the west rosebud trailhead by about 7:30 am. we can car pool over to the east rosebud trailhead and get on the trail hopefully no later than 9:00 am. that should get us out by around 7:30 at the latest. my parent's started at 8:30 am and got out at 5:30 pm. they had to wait for the other group at the top for a while. so im kinda thinking the snow will slow us down quite a bit.
andyp
nothing is wrong - what are you scared of?
alright.. is the weather supposed to be okay tomorrow? It's been pretty cloudy/thunderstormy today and yesterday here. So we are all meeting at west at 7:30 then?
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
supposed to be like low 80's and possible thunderstoms. so who knows how far we will actually get before rain hits.
so if andyp can bring two pairs of snowshoes, and chiken one, can i borrow a pair of yours, ap?
sure, 7:30 a.m. at west rosebud. i might bring some peoples.
yeah, i will actually *need* you to bring me a pair, if possible, ap. the sob barn is already closed today, and they won't open early enough tomorrow. call me if you can't asap so i can track down a pair. thanks!
andyp
nothing is wrong - what are you scared of?
yeah no problem. i got them out of storage in absarokee today so i'll bring them both.
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
this may be to late, but AP how well do you know the roads down there? i was looking at a map and noticed a rod that cuts over just south of roscoe that would shave a good chunk of time off the shuttle. the map i have doesn't have a name for the road.
i got a nice topo and food (more than enough for me). i will bring a water filter so we can carry less water.
this is going to be a fucking grueling pace. thirteen miles in one day? :|
can i just meet you guys at east rosebud? this is a 2.5 to 3 hour drive for me. i don't want to leave here at 4:30am. :(
or maybe i could meet chiken in columbus?
so it's from 6,200' (east rosebud) to 10,200' (prairie view/froze-to-death plateau pass) to 6,500' (west rosebud). so i guess 4,000' gain.
andyp
nothing is wrong - what are you scared of?
did you get the driving figured out, lr?
andyp
nothing is wrong - what are you scared of?
I wouldn't mind just meeting you at east. I can wait for chiken at west.. however you want to do it. And if it's too snowy or stormy or whatever, it's all good if we need to turn around and just backtrack. I'm not dead set on completing this shit gung ho, yo.
I'm making some spam musubi tonight for tomorrow :D
yeah, so you two go to west.

awesome pics guys. i might try and get the last week of august off and go up to algonquin for a few days. i love the wilderness.
ap: no cropping; i didn't shoot vertically. yeah, i was using the 35mm; it's my only lens. :)
f/11 1/200s iso 200 for me, so i was shooting 1.833 stops hotter than you. i should have metered or reviewed better.

yeah, im not sure what a good time to do it would be. from the pictures my parents have sent me of the beartooths this winter, it seemed like they didn't get hardly any snow. so, im under the impression it could be done a lot sooner than usual.
first thing im doing when i get back is a road trip down there. its been tough going for 4 months without driving.
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
I've taken to day hiking the bayous around here. I used to walk the bayous all the time when in school, but it's sort of fallen out of favor to cars and motorcycles (VROOM VROOM). You can find some interesting stuff out in the bayous. (I once made about $200 by selling some lo-pro rims I found submerged in one of 'em.) Plus I get to experience things that have sadly become a rarity around here, like walking in waist-high grass, chasing rabbits, etc.
I'm havin' fun! :D

yeah, its like a 4 day hike and you start at east rosebud lake.
well, 4 days if you do a bunch of the side trails to a lot of the other lakes and what not. i've heard of people doing it in 2 but i guess they practically run the entire way.
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
i dont know if anyone else would be up for this, but it's something i've always wanted to do: hike down to twin lakes and do some sledding. it's only about maybe a mile and a half down, and from what i saw yesterday, it's pretty clear down to the lakes, just gotta trudge through some snow around the lakes to get to the hills. even so, the lakes are still completely fozen and i think it would be a blast if anyone else would want to do it.
andyp
nothing is wrong - what are you scared of?
yeah i think they are doing 4 or 5 days. and where are the twin lakes?

Don't Let Your Walls Down
you know when your coming up the highway from red lodge, and theres the pull out that goes around the "Welcome to Wyoming" sign? well you park there, and go west across the field, down the hill then south a bit and there will be twin lakes.
the hills around the lake are crazy steep but fun to slide around on. i dunno, just one of the weird things i've always kinda wanted to do.

My brother and roommate and I went for a day hike last weekend. Wasn't anything intense like 16 miles, (more like 7) but made my thighs quakey after about 3 hrs going in a obnoxiously straight line uphill.

Depends on how close the hike is, chiken. I'm in billings right now, going back to Bozeman tomorrow. I'm not sure I can afford to make that trip twice this week, or go somewhere even farther

it's like just before you go up the beartooth pass at the end of the lakefork road.

well fuck it, i'm going saturday. if you want to go, were planning on leaving the trailhead at 9:30am. to get to the trailhead, head south out of red lodge towards the beartooth pass, turn right on lake fork road, trailhead is at the end of the road.

Leaving Monday for
Colorado Bend State Park as well as a few other parks nearby... will be spending a week out and about. Managed to fit all my stuff in a 30L pack, though my friend is carrying the food in his pack ... so I guess it's not as impressive as I think it is sometimes. :D

Our week-long tour of various parks was an absolutely horrendous time. It rained every day, usually let up at night so we could get swarmed with mosquitoes and flies. The first night we were being stalked by a one-eyed raccoon, who tried to lead an army of very, very brave raccoons into our campsite and we fended them off with a shovel and a hatchet. We we high as balls and it was absolutely terrifying ... so that was also the last night we smoked until the drive home, which was probably for the best.
On the plus side we made an awesome shanty town for our time at Enchanted Rock. We lived like hobos with tents. I liked it. Felt like home for some reason...

Spending 5 days in a WMA over Spring Break! Finally invested in a water filter, too. Bringing my camera, so pictures will be had!

During the day it was, at night it would drop into the low-40s. That sucked.
Your night temperature was better than our day temperature.

Oh, yeah, I believe that. After returning from the trip the weather picked back up and it's in the upper-80s during the day and upper-70s at night. Love it. :D
