what font do you prefer for your documents?
serif? sans-serif?
sans-serif for the win!
tahoma is my personal fav. but there were a bunch in my typo. class that were "fun" to draw but hard to remember the names, esp. because they were fonts.
i like the latex serif font (vera?)
serifs for all my essays, please. :D

Serif!
Sans-serif is for hipster Apple users with scalable fonts.

absolutely serif for a document. Times New Roman always works, but Georgia looks a little nicer if you're concerned with aesthetics.
i'm a huge fan of frutiger's fonts. avenir, frutiger, etc.
just typeset my graduation announcement in latex.
http://www.wingedleopard.net/lucas/other/card.pdf
while db will be proud of the absence of capital letters, he'll be disappointed in my serifs.
maybe i'll make a special one for him sans serifs. :)
very nice. congratulations.

i like the second one more.
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
I like 'em both. very spartan.
one nit-picky thing on the second one: you put "from" and "on" at the beginnings of the two last lines, but you put "of" on the line with "degree" instead of the line after it. any reason?
seemed like the best way
no word from djb yet. :o
i need to find an ink jet quickly to get these printed and mailed out.
i might just go buy one from walmart tonight and try to return it (after studying their return policy).
hahaha, good luck. i'd say try a smaller joint but that would seem a bit sketchier.
(hmmm... philosophy training kicks in)
my card stock is so heavy that no one can print on it!
i tried a laser at my office--didn't work
took them to kinkos, they couldn't handle it
tried a friend's ink jet--jammed
the shop i bought the stock at said they can print on it, so i'm taking it back there tomorrow.
nice. take a pic, i love heavy paper. does it have a nice grain?
nice grain? probably ;o
so i got screwed. i took it to the old lady at the shop i bought the stock from, and she couldn't get it working in acrobat. and it didn't have all the printing options i'm used to, i think it was an old version. so she's like "i can just copy and paste this into publisher..."
..so i lost my typesetting. i couldn't put up with it anymore, i wanted it over with. i have a physics final exam in less than 2 hours.
not to mention that i'm paying her $0.40 per card to print them. but i'm so sick of dealing with it. and i learned my lesson--you have to own all the equipment and do it correctly yourself. period.
i mean, fuck, even kinkos couldn't do it, and they are probably some of the most competent printers in this town.

I'm still looking for my perfect Sans Serif font.
Fonts are something I'm starting to become obsessed with. I had a dream where there was a panel similar to the Google Summer of Code handing out $20,000 grants to projects. I suggested a new font renderer for OSS and the lady said YES! I'm still using Charter! Approved.
I've never even heard of charter font. Googling has yielded interesting results.
http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/bitstream/charter/
http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/itc/charter/
http://www.linotype.com/610/itccharter-family.html
They seem to all reference the same font, however. Very odd. I also have a review of the Liberation fonts released by Red Hat at my website.
Here are some candidates for perfect Sans Serif:
Frutiger
Helvetica
GE Inspira
Myriad Pro
DaGr8Gatzby

I already have the first two. Frutiger is ok. I don't have the entire family though.
I'll look for the other two.
GE Inspira is tough to find, I can zip and email if you want.

now you just need a wee bit more letter-spacing
what units do you recommend for letter-spacing and line-spacing?
i tried ems for line-spacing, and it made the spacing uneven.
so ems or percents or points? (i'm assuming no pixels.)
pixels is the only option if you want the space to be even on a screen

it's a bit finicky (i see what you mean), but yes. take a look at the spacing. italics flow better.

asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
I'm curious about the width of the space taken up by the letters. like, if you drew a rectangle around each, which would have the smaller area?
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
out of curiosity I did it myself.
italic S is 129x150 so it has an area of 19,350 pixels.
roman S is 93x163 so it has an area of 15,159 pixels.
I cropped them as accurately as I could, but the difference is pretty big, so I doubt it would have made a difference.
i wouldn't measure the area of the glyph like that... see the overhang on the italic?
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
hmm true. I think they'd be the same area then, though. but the italic one still takes up more horizontal space, I think, even with the overhang. I guess it's just that vs. the vertical space saved then. but that seems to favor italics since apparently you can fit more of them in a given space. my head hurts.
try measuring the area of a word
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
let's measure the area of every word in the English language and then average them! haha.

:) I was glad when I saw this thread topped. I should learn latex.
special (free-ish) fixed-width typeface for coding:
http://www.ms-studio.com/FontSales/anonymouspro.html
"Characters that could be mistaken for one another (O, 0, I, l, 1, etc.) have distinct shapes to make them easier to tell apart in the context of source code."
"Anonymous Pro also features an international, Unicode-based character set, with support for most Western and European Latin-based languages, Greek, and Cyrillic. It also includes special “box drawing” characters if you need them."
"While Anonymous Pro looks great on Macs and Windows PCs with antialiasing enabled, it also includes embedded bitmaps for specific pixel sizes (“ppems” in font nerd speak) for both the regular and bold weight. (Since slanted bitmaps look pretty bad and hard to read at the supported sizes, I chose to use the upright bitmaps for the italics as well.) Bitmaps are included for these pixel sizes: 10, 11, 12, and 13. See the usage notes (at right) for info on which point sizes these correspond to on Mac and Windows."
"And, like Anonymous™, Anonymous Pro is distributed as copyrighted freeware fonts. You are free to use and distribute them in any way as long you keep them together and include the “Read Me” document that is included with the fonts."
I'll have to try this.

lr> i like the latex serif font (vera?)
I think the default is Computer Modern Serif.
I'm doing my resume up in LaTeX, MiKTeX to be exact. It looks like there are ways to use TTF fonts, I'm attempting to use a new serif font, and doing it manually looks involved:
http://www.radamir.com/tex/ttf-tex.htm
or you can use an TTF font installer package:
http://mtfi.sourceforge.net/
I'm considering ditching MiKTeX because of how unorganized everything is. I can't tell what all the folders are for or why there are different "latex" and "miktex" folders strewn about. I have a general idea about where the main packages are installed. Anyone suggest another distribution? TeX Live?
I would try XeTeX if the Windows port didn't look like ass (Mac users might enjoy XeTex).

why haven't we talked about ms office switching the default font to calibri in this thread?
Because no one here likes, uses, or cares about MS Office?
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
I have to use it from time to time, but usually just to make sure formatting is preserved from OOo to MS.
i use MS office 10 all day at work. our defaults are on arial.
I only use MS Office extremely sporadic at work, especially since I figured out how to ditch outlook and connect to exchange with $any IMAP client using DAVmail.
At home, I never use MS Office, or OO.o, or any other "office". I simply have no use for it.
I must admit, the only office program I *do* like is Publisher ... I know it has something of a bad rep, but compared to MS Word, it's a blessing.
i spend 70% of my time in excel, 20% of my time in powerpoint, and 10% of my time in outlook.
i would lose it if i had to spend time in word.
