here's how i used to format previous journals.

leather bound, ruled--this one was primarily for philosophy. i'd write words then draw a little QED box to mark the end of the entry. recently, i began adding dates (e.g., " - 4/25") followed by the QED box.

blue, bound, unruled--this one was the main journal (recalling the beauty). i'd write words then suffix the entry with a date/time stamp and then the QED box (e.g., " - 4/25, 4:12am [box]").

dilemma!

i want my new journal to hold everything:
* journal (recollection/moment) entries
* philosophy (transcendent) entries
* project sketches

the only thing i won't put in it is any kind of gtd list. sketching out a new script for ttf is fine, but writing something like "dentist appt. on monday" won't fly.

now i want to separate these three things, but i'm not sure how. i could make it a linear format, beginning each entry with a date/time stamp and the entry type. so a page would look like:

i was talking to ben and erin last night, and some random people would stop by. it's odd how even the self-proclaimed hippies criticize other people. or how they'll say someone "is cool" or someone "isn't cool." how can i be more of a humanist than self-proclaimed hippies? i was never really an advocate for αγάπη, but i'm starting to think that it is the most perfect superhuman form of love. the creator (i don't mean god here) doesn't need anything else to value, nor does he need to understand or be understood.

last night someone broke into our house. they rubbed caitlins feet while she was sleeping, wandered around a bit, turned off my lcd, then left. i think it was some random guy looing for a neighbor or someone, but caitlin thinks otherwise.

so here's the plan with ttf--i'm going to ...

i think that's my preferred plan. then i can just begin on the first page and keep going to the end. other ideas include creating sections of the journal for different types of entries. i don't like this idea because i will invariably end up with no room left in one section and tons of room in the other section. i was also thinking about using a highlighter and creating some kind of tab system on the edge of the pages.

thoughts?

I have a similar dilemma right now. I've been trying to think about how to solve it with different sections though, because I want stuff like a to-do list (with due dates) as well as a journal integrated into one. I don't like the idea of sections for the same reason as you, but I've thought about using 3-hole-punched paper or something and getting a 5.5" x 8.5" three-ring binder. but I kind of like just plain, ruled paper. an unfortunate dilemma.

I'm satisfied with the journal method you're using so far larz. I get to see it in action here in the blackbook, and it looks comfortable and useful!

I don't like the tab system idea, I can never seem to get myself to enjoy that.

As for making a to-do list what if you got a journal with two sided pages, where you can write from one direction as a journal, and start from the back by flipping it over for the scheduling portion. I think this would combat the issue of running out of room. One side dedicated to schedules, the other to journaling!

I prefer 1/4" grids on the miquelarius. I'm going to attempt this system. I'll throw more ideas on here when I get to them.
