so i did a clean install. it's okay.
i have installed virtually nothing. i did xp sp2 with drivers for video, wifi, bt, snd, lcd. that's really it. the only thinkpad software i installed was ocd for the volume/brightness controls. no aps or power manager or access connections.
when i suspend to ram or hdd, it still hangs for a bit upon resume. WHY?! i'm really starting to think this is a hardware issue.
i also hate my trackpoint. it gets stuck. like i'll be using it and i'll let go of it and it will keep moving. or it fights me--when i'm trying to move it one direction, it is very resistent, and if i let go, it moves the other direction very fast.
otherwise i guess things are fine on this guy. i might do another freshie in a couple days. i think i can't resolve these issues, though. my trackpoint is fucked and something is fucked with suspend. i've had this tp for less than a year--maybe i'll get it repaired.
spray some alcohol on the trackpoint
did you install lenovo acpi drivers?
> spray some alcohol on the trackpoint
take off the red nipple and spray it in there? or where, exactly?
> did you install lenovo acpi drivers?
no.. do i need to?

last night, windows wasn't letting me encrypt "C:\Documents and Settings\lucas\My Documents" (ntfs efs). and it wouldn't give me a reason. today it did, though. so i'm happy again.
and i turned off autoplay in the mmc local policy editor--but my external hdd still autoplays! argh!
question:
i turned off autoplay in:
local policy > user conf > admin templates > system > "turn off autoplay"
is this an active policy, or will it not change anything because it's a "template"?
tia.
one of my favorite threads about hangs on resume:
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=31961
this happens to so many people, it seems, and no one has really figured it out.
yeah, just spray it. it won't hurt it, it all evaporates.
not sure about the hang on resume.
weird about the encryption and autoplay.
okay, well i just installed this:

i'll let you know how it goes. thanks for the suggestion
still hangs with the acpi driver. sigh

Acpi eh? How old is this thinkpad? Do you think it's the acpi implementation in windows? I don't know much about power management, but maybe a custom written acpi implementation might do the trick. BTW, did you ever see this?

my hibernate function worked fine just now. I hate using it though. I've only done it a few times, having it lock sucks so much I don't even bother with it.
yeah suspend rules.
sorry db I meant the computer locks on hibernation not locks on relogin to windows. I mean it does that too but I like it that way. I just don't like the freezing type of locking up :(
