21:55 < lucas> i just got my credit report for free
21:55 < asemisldkfj> nice
21:55 < lucas> all you have to do is apply for a credit card out of your league
21:55 < lucas> then when they decline you, they are required to provide your
credit report by law
21:56 < lucas> so you go online to www.experian.com/reportaccess
21:56 < lucas> which is one of the three reporting agencies
21:56 < lucas> and you can check it all out online
21:56 < lucas> otherwise, getting your credit report is expensive
21:57 < lucas> i got one of my credit cards down to a zero balance, too :)
21:58 < lucas> i'm rocking the shit out of this dumb credit game
21:58 < lucas> it is such a game
21:58 < lucas> establishing credit, building it, gaining points
21:58 < lucas> all this shit
21:58 < lucas> did you know that you don't gain credit by paying off your
credit card bills every month?
21:59 < lucas> you have to carry a balance and pay interest to build credit
21:59 < lucas> so it costs money to get credit
21:59 < lucas> just so you can borrow more fucking money
21:59 < lucas> that will cost you more!
21:59 < lucas> bah!
you can also do it by having a bank account and saying you want it to accrue credit. they basically set a high min balance for a savings acct and it acts as credit. i heard about this after being told my credit wouldn't hold up for the cell phone i currently have, as it is a two year plan. so they required me to put down about $250 to buffer for my uncreditworthiness.
and you should be able to get one free credit report via mail per year from the three agencies you mentioned. if you split it up to come in alternating trimesters it usually covers all your credit monitoring needs. i found out about it looking into antifraud protection. a lot of times people who steal credit sign up for credit cards under your name and fuck up your credit without you knowing via mail scam. you only find out on credit reports or credit monitoring from yer bank.
avoid getting regular credit checks since they in fact count against you on your credit report. here's how it works, every time you get a credit check run against you it looks as though you're trying to borrow money and that's considered bad *my mom is a bank employee*. so if you're shopping around for a car you should try to get a credit report from the first place you go and see if they'll accept it elsewhere(i was in the market recently). also, the gov't is required to give you one free credit check per year,
https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp .
yeah, but only other people checking your credit counts against you. you can obtain your own credit report as many times as you wish without it ever counting against you.
Alright I thought this place was shifty before but my bank suggested I get a credit report here, and it's legit. The site sucks though and it looks really damn unprofessional.
So like I said earlier you can do this in alternating trimesters via the three credit reporting agencies to keep up on your credit reports through the year. It's the same link as db posted!!
https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp
I just ordered mine from Experian.
I just got a credit card that has a bottom-line 12.4% APR, which seems to suck but the rest of the stuff is reasonable. The one from WAMU that I was checking looks competitive at 9.99% after the introductory period, but the "Default APR" runs 21.3% or something.
Also the fees for use and forwarding cost more, and the inability to pay the min balance charge is a high fee at Washington Mutual. I at least get cash back on my USAA, even if the APR is seemingly high. Hopefully I can keep up my good habit of killing bad balances monthly, with this credit card game.

Good luck phi
I had shitty credit. Now I'm rocking the game. What you can do to give yourself a boost is apply for a personal loan(unsecured albeit). DO NOT WASTE THE MONEY INSIDE!!! LEAVE IT THERE! Pay the monthly bill and then after 6 months, pay the balance off. DO NOT SPEND THE MONEY!!!

Credit balance is important to know when you are paying tuition :)
you mean credit line? yeah.. i think dp found that out too.
who has the best cash back VISA card?
capital one does a 1% cash back on all purchases that is redeemable anytime. but i want something better. does it exist?

AH ARE YOU SERIOUS ASEMI?!?!
Three things you need to find out ASAP:
1. Interest Rate
2. Credit Balance
3. Grace period
1. I forget this :|. I don't plan on carrying a balance though.
2. this is like the max credit, right? I know that.
3. dunno about this :|.
> you mean credit line? yeah.. i think dp found that out too.
Line of credit? Yeah.. I mainly found out I didn't have as much as I thought I had boosted it to. You can't request another boost in credit within 80 days(?) or something.
pro tip: if you ever ask to boost your credit limit, and the bank asks you if you want 1000 or 5000, make sure you choose the higher end (as long as you have self control with your card and pay your balance off. In this case it was tuition that I had the money for).
An alternative is just making the large payment over your credit limit and pay as soon as you can, the problem is your card gets locked until that month is over.
Oh yeah, and next time I pay my tuition I'm using a check because a credit card transaction tacks on a 6% fee for using their cc service, bullshit!
DaGr8Gatzby

WTF?!?! No way!!
I have never paid a 6% fee for ANY purchase regarding my credit card for any transactions over 1k. Is this for your school?

Credit line and interest rate is important in planning on building your credit, you can save up money for a HUGE purchase, use ONE credit card to purchase it, and pay it offin 3 months time with the money originally saved + 10 bucks :)

of course you're fucked with a 0% interest card :)
yeah it's for school :x
dp> You can't request another boost in credit within 80 days(?) or something.
depends on the lender/card, naturally.
dgg> Is this for your school?
my school also charges a service fee if you pay online with a credit card. however, if you go to the cashier on campus, you don't have to pay a fee.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capital_One#Controversy - Note the second paragraph. Trust me man. STAY AWAY from Capital One. They will fuck your credit score because they report to credit agencies as saying you are tapped. No funds available.
from wikipedia:
To date, Capital One has not disclosed its customers' total credit limits to credit reporting agencies. This could result in lower credit scores for the company's customers, since it could artificially increase a customer's utilization, a measure of credit balance as a percentage of credit line. Capital One announced plans to end this practice, and announced that it would report credit limits to credit reporting agencies by the end of 2007.
this seems inconclusive.
but my utilization is small:
amex open -- max balance $500 out of $5000 credit limit
capital one visa -- max balance $2000 out of $5000 credit limit
so if they see $2500/$5000 utilization because of capital one not reporting my credit limit, that's not too bad--50% utilization. not to mention that i pay off my balances every month.
but capital one is a huge player in the credit market. and if they do this, i would think the credit reporting agencies would take it into account.
maybe i'll take this into consideration and make sure i never utilize more than 60% of my total credit line (not including capital one).
p.s. i wonder if they did start reporting credit limits.

They haven't. My buddy works at a Bank and the credit agencies still show credit lines not in their entirety.

Charles Schwab's credit card does 2% back, but it has to go into a Schwab Brokerage Account, IIRC.
i'm levering up hard, only 11% interest on my new credit card as i am technically a bank employee (although not in the retail banking group)
my apr is 3mo.
LIBOR + 7.1%

currently 8.0375% apr. seems swell to me!

That is. I currently have one credit card that has rewarded me for paying it off. My interest is currently at 9%. Nice nice. I'm thinking about either a mac pro or a tempurpedic.
eep, libor + 710. i just checked the yields on the bloomberg in my office and if you were a corporate issuer you would be near-distressed.
:p
i just got a notice from capital one. they are raising my interest rates to 17.9% (prime + 14.65%) beginning in january.
luckily i don't have a balance. they can shove it up their ass.

i closed my capital one visa. i opened a wells fargo visa. they now have a full 1% cash back on all purchases (it used to be a sliding scale up to 1%).
i just opened an american express true earnings small business credit card, which pretty much has the best cash back ever:
4% for annual gasoline purchases of up to $6,000 (1% thereafter)
3% for restaurants
2% for travel
1% everywhere else
i'm going to close my american express simply cash small business credit card, which has good cash back too:
5% for wireless service and office supplies
3% for annual gasoline purchases of up to $12,000 (1% thereafter)
1% for virtually all other purchases
the bad thing about using business credit cards is that amex won't report to the consumer credit agencies, so they don't help build consumer credit.
i just called american express to have my old card closed. they offered me $25 to keep it open. so i took it.

haha. on any condition? can you just close it again in like a month?
no condition. yeah, i can close it whenever i like. "have dinner on us and think about it."
so because they gave me the $25 credit to the account, i needed a replacement card, because i had already cut mine up.
so i called and got a replacement. they paid $17.50 to sent it via u.s.p.s. express mail to me.
$17.50 just so i could dispose of their $25.00 gift. i think they've confused me with a big spender.

I'd like an Amex card, too.
i applied for a u.s. bank cash back card online. it made an offer, but the apr was too high for my liking. so i clicked the "decline offer" button.
i received the card anyway. i don't want it. but i know that closing cards quickly negatively affects one's credit score. sucks. dumb bastards

I've got 3 cards. a wells fargo credit card, chase amazon card, and conoco/phillips gas card. i charge just about everything i can, about anything i'm buying in person goes on the wells fargo card, onlince purchases go on the amazon card, and gas of course goes on the conoco card if i can find a conoco/phillips/route66.
works out pretty well. no debts/late payments. usually just have to pay $600 a month spread across each card. i think i've only carried a balance once and it was only like $50 after paying something like $500.

Isn't this only applicable if you activate it? I've gotten cards in the past that I've simply thrown away and they didn't show up in my credit report.
Or does applying for a card mean you've already fully opened the acount?

i made a deposit at wells fargo bank on friday, with whom i also have a visa card.
on the deposit receipt, a message was printed thus: "you should not make payments on your credit card exceeding 10% of your earnings."
i have been paid off my huge balance in a short span of time. do you think they printed that message especially for me or was it a coincidence? creepy

i forgot to post this before:
my dad told me that he got offered the centurion card. i guess the packaging that he received was pretty elaborate. he didn't go for it because the annual fee is absurd, and he doesn't do those.
i thought that was cool, though. i didn't know that middle class people got offers for it

Any current recommendations for credit cards? It has been over a year from my last hard credit pull and my average account age it about 4 years now. I think it may be a good time to increase my limits because I normally have a high use ratio on revolving credit.
