about that plunger tilt/shift idea, do you still have that rig still? I was thinking of trying to do it and building a ghetto rail system for focusing.

awesome! i'm jealous of your 1.8
It's so cheap! After reading about all the other lenses it seems the best value for the price. Having that extra light in there is what I mainly needed. I just look at some of my shots from my canon a-1 (f1.4), the bokeh on a few of them have made some of my favorite photos larz-promo & dc, and the jovial dp.
Now I think I have myself covered for a really good amount of shot situations. The kit 18-130mm zoom is pretty great for the daytime, and now I can shoot in darker situations a lot nicer.
both of those filters are clear and the correct diameters for your lenses, i take it?
i'm glad you got the f/1.8 50mm. seems pretty essential to have a fast 50mm lens.
Actually, it's not. I forgot to mention that I would need the 55mm to 52mm macro coupler. I have it in my list now ;) so for about $20 I could get my two lenses hooked up to each other.
..so what are the filters for, then?
> both of those filters are clear and the correct diameters for your lenses, i take it?
oops, yeah those are the right diameters for the filters. For the other macro setup I have the incomplete filter sizes to correctly hook them together, explained in previous post.
filters:
Oh I was looking at the cokin filter holder. It seems very flexible and decently cheap. The Cokin holder is neat because you can stack up to 3 filters, and they can be placed manually where you need them. Both regular cut filters and round screw-ins fit for stacking. Filters are expensive though! The cokin P filter holder system works with most normal camera sizes, for wide and really large lenses there is another system too. Has anyone checked out Lee filter holders? I haven't see a Hoya filter holder, I think they primarily use the screw-in types.
> oops, yeah those are the right diameters for the filters.
i don't know what this means. i thought you chose the filter size based on the lens diameter (ø).
for clarity, you own two lenses and you purchased two clear filters, one for each, correct?
> for clarity, you own two lenses and you purchased two clear filters, one for each, correct?
Yes, filters fitting each. The right diameters for the lenses. When I said for the filters, I mainly meant in the case of the filters instead of the case of macro adapters. Both use the filter sizes but I read your question wrong. I assumed you were talking about my filter-adaption mistake I made during the macro adapter discussion.
k, got it. :)
lr: awesome!
Here is the correct macro adapter setup for my two lenses:

hi jage! welcome :) lots of glass right there!
andyp: the d200 gives you a bump in shutter speed from 1/4000-1/8000 and some more hardcore weather sealing than the d80. The only other difference I saw was that it has the vari-program thing where you can keep settings on the camera for different shooting modes custom for each type of shooting you want. The d80 only keeps your custom settings for the manual mode.
how about a D2xs? :D
check out the new:
55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor
VR for <$250 !! pretty darn reasonable for VR action :)
do you like your 18-135mm ? they are expensive at $300 !
where did you get your 50mm f/1.8D AF ? how much? i can't find it on bh.
andyp

sweet. i want a d80 with one of those. i don't need a fancy 18-135mm.
the 18-135mm rocks for daytime usage, get some good wide landscapes and a sweet zoom!
with only the 50mm you'd be running around all the time trying to get your frame :D
i like working the dof with the 50mm. indoor portraits with it are pretty sweet too.
i enjoy shooting with available light so the f1.8 is great for the price.
Ok I've been looking for a flash unit.
I want to spend under $200. I want flexibility.

andyp: sweet, is that coming up really soon?
arun: it's fun and challenging to ask people if you could take their portrait on the streets. It's a little easier if you target people your age, or people who are dressed to stand out a bit. They are generally pretty welcome to random interruptions :D
Will you just be taking photos from far away of street scenes? What kind of lenses will you use? I don't think you should feel too uncomfortable on the streets alone!

next on my list, i believe!
I don't think it comes with a lens, so i will have to do some research on that still.
also, I am considering a high end nikon zoom tele for portraits.
lucas, did you try searching for 28mm on
keh.com ? They have plenty of old/used stuff.
I had so much fun with that 300mm telephoto, even though it made my D40 totally manual.
nestor, manual focus ain't fun ? Am having fun manual focusing 50mm. :) Moving subjects are hard though.
it was just a lot different than what i'm used to. I did okay with a moving subject, although it was my dog :P
dp, what is the difference between "focal length range" and "focal length equivalent?"
i'm guessing that this is very relevant:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikon_DX_format#Implications
so that would indeed be the lens that i want as a normal lens.
is this not correct?
and i'm guessing that when nikon says "Focal Length Equivalent" on that page, they mean "135 Film Focal Length Equivalent."
if this is true, then i do indeed want a 42mm 135 film focal length equivalent, seeing that 42mm is normal for 135 film.
I want to try film. I want a rangefinder.
dunno, i'm just going to stay away from making comments about optics
andyp
nothing is wrong - what are you scared of?
usually they list lenses by the actual 35mm focal length, meaning you will have to multiply that focal length by your specific sensor size factor to find out what your actual focal length will be with that sensor crop.
> dunno, i'm just going to stay away from making comments about optics
that's too bad. i wanted your response, and it seems i'll never get it.
> usually they list lenses by the actual 35mm focal length
so for that nikkor 28mm f/2.8d, is the 28mm the focal length for 135 or for dx? do you know?
For 28mm lens, the focal length remains same whether its a DX or FX. Crop factor or focal length equivalent affects the field of view. So if the crop factor is 1.5, the 28mm will "act like" a 42mm i.e, the field of view will be that of a 42mm lens on a 35mm camera. Correct me if am wrong.
andyp
nothing is wrong - what are you scared of?
the focal length no matter what is 28mm.. meaning it will produce the same image circle. The DX only utilizes about 1/3 of what the 135 film plane would, so its not necessarily making the focal length any longer, but just cropping in and giving you the image of what a 42mm would regularly. So yeah it would be a normal lens, only you won't be utilizing the whole image cirlce.
thanks for the information, dp, ap, and arun!
today, b&h finally started carrying the d90 as a body-only product:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/sitem/sku=580241& … amp;bi=E15
i kinda want a compact camera. i'd like a sturdy body and a non-telescoping lens, like some of the exilims
in similar spirit, i have the canon sd750. the lens does telescope, though. i never use zoom on it, neither digital nor optical. i agree that a fixed lens would be nice. :)
one of the things i love about the canon sd750 is that it doesn't have a viewfinder. they are so useless if the camera isn't SLR! you should really use the lcd to compose your shot on a point-and-shoot, because the viewfinder is often grossly incorrect.
okay, if i were to get into digital photography today, here is what i'd do:
(1) buy a nikon d90 body for $1000.
(2) buy a nikkor af 28mm f/2.8d for $225.
(3) buy a 52mm uv filter for $10.
(4) buy a datacolor spider2express for $65.
(5) steal my mom's nec ips lcd2090uxi-bk.
my laptop's lcd is terrible, and i would not get serious about digital photography if i didn't have an editing environment with reliable color reproduction.
so (1-3) gets me a nice shooting setup, and (4-5) gets me a nice editing setup.
total cost: $1300, plus a new monitor for my mom.
I want Sigma 30mm f/1.4 and Tamron 17-50 f/2.8.
BTW, what camera bag do you guys use ? I want to take my camera every time am outside.
I have a small military bag, that's really pretty similar to a Domke bag. It works pretty great for carrying just a few things. I like their shoulder bags quite a bit, just the right amount of padding, and really durable:
http://tiffen.com/products.html?tablename=domke
I own the satchel variety that I use for books, and my laptop as well as camera.
Here's what I'd like to get next:
(1) Nikon EN-EL3e.
(2) Nikon Speedlight SB-800.
(3) 50mm
f/1.4G
Would anyone like to buy my 50mm
f/1.8 and/or 18-135mm
f/3.5-5.6? I can sell separate or together. If not they might be going on the amazon lens market soon.
Hey lr, I found this awesome lens you might like that is out of production:

i use the adventure 9 tamrac
http://www.tamrac.com/frame_adv.htm
it is pretty sweet! but it is not handy for really on the fly things (weddings) i use it to lug stuff around.. holds a great amount and it seems to be incredibly durable so far.. I've had it for a few years now.
I would now rather go for an over the shoulder tote thing with the lens compartments for easy access.
small tamrac shoulder bag that's got room for a d40 with lens, 300 mm, flash and small things
I like domke bags. At $100+, they're a bit out of my budget. I prefer shoulder/messenger bags for easy access. Any other recommendations ?

nikkor 28mm f/2.8 af $225

cons: slower
sigma 30mm f/1.4 ex dc hsm af $366

pros: very fast
cons: sigma glass, big, heavy, no aperture ring, 62mm dia., expensive
sigma 28mm f/1.8 ex aspherical dg df macro af $256

pros: fast, macro
cons: sigma glass, very big, very heavy, no aperture ring, 77mm dia.

only $2,600 :)
i can't believe it's not a full-frame lens. only an idiot would spend $2,600 on a DX-format lens.
rev1: a "D" marking on the lens means that the lens gathers distance information. this is different from the "DX" marking, which indeed forces a DX crop.

nothing is wrong - what are you scared of?
Looking into the nikkor 85mm 1.4 for a solid portrait lens - $969.95 on bh
did you decide to get it?
i would personally want something around 200mm for portraits.
this looks nice to me.
also, the 85mm 1:1.8 is only $400 on bh.
someone i've talked to thinks that gaining 2/3 of a stop (1:1.8 -> 1:1.4) on a 50mm isn't worth paying $200 extra. i wonder if they would support spending $500 extra to gain 2/3 of a stop (1:1.8 -> 1:1.4) on an 85mm.
i've been considering the nikon 50mm 1:1.4 for $325. it would be a fast normal lens on my 135 slr and a fast, short, cheap telephoto on my dx slr.
andyp
nothing is wrong - what are you scared of?
if I get the 85 1.4 i might let my 50 1.8 go for really cheap. let me know if you are interested.
I think I would rather just spend the extra money on the faster lens. from the reviews i have read, this lens is legendary. sexy and smooth. I feel that If I did get the 1.8 i would just be regretting it and wishing that I had the 1.4. the 1.4 has much better bokeh and is heavier. i like heavy :)
yeah, the build quality of the 1:1.4 is amazing. the lower-end nikon lenses with the plastic casing just don't compare to the heavy metal ones. :)
if you want an 85mm fixed, fuck yeah, get the 1:1.4. :D
i am interested in the 50mm 1:1.8. let me know when you want to sell it.
i met a girl at my fave bar with a d80
stock lens. maybe we'll go shooting this week
cute. :)
and she has only had it for a few weeks.
tutorial session time
i'm teaching my sister how to use my canon ae-1p today.
well my older battery died. it doesn't do a power check when popped in the camera. doesn't do anything. it seemed to charge fully before shooting. i dunno what happened.
:(
i'm thinking the nikkor af 35mm 1:2d is the real deal. it has a minimum focus distance of only ten inches! i'd use it on both 135 and dx bodies happily. :D
ap, i think the price went up on the nikkor 85mm 1:1.4.
so now this lens is about the same price: nikkor 135mm dc 1:2.
you should seriously check it out. you lose a stop, but you still have the same great build quality, you get more reach, and you get defocus control! :D
so from what i've read today, the 85mm 1:1.4 and the two dc lenses are the benchmark portraiture lenses made by nikon.
so we're on the same page:
nikon 2.0 105mm dc
nikon 2.0 135mm dc
this looks like a good deal.
i got my replacement nikkor 28mm from b&h, and the inner barrel is yet again loose. so i'm assuming that it's just how the lens is. so i got an rma with the reason that the "product isn't expected." normally they don't give you free return shipping, but i talked a cs rep into it. <3
i have $500 to spend on a new lens for my d40. any recommendations from you photography types?

First of all, do you like fixed lenses or zooms? Do you shoot in low-light situations a lot?
you're stuck with af-s lenses. with that in mind---
nikon just came out with this:
nikon 35mm f/1.8g af-s dx lens (
link ,
review). it's only $220, it's a great fixed normal lens for dx, and it's fast for the money.
perhaps a zoom like
this would be useful to you?
what do you like to shoot? in what conditions? what lens(es) do you currently have?
i like shooting small things up close in available light, so i'm pretty keen on the 35mm f/2 or f/1.8 lenses.
No real preference on fixed/zoom. I shot a lot of low-light when I was living in London and going to concerts all the time -- I guess looking to the future that would be useful for me.
I've got the kit and a couple old fixed lenses without autofocus (300mm, 135mm, 50mm wideangle).
And I have to spend the whole $500.
hahaha can you buy two lenses? maybe a $200 fixed and a $300 zoom?
yeah, i can do that
your kit lens is 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6, right?
yeah. going into this i was planning on looking for something faster.
no - nothing else? :(
what does this mean?
> 50mm wideangle
it's a nikon 50mm f/2.2 wide-angle from the 80s.
if you want a fast lens with af, then get the nikon 35mm f/1.8g af.
if you want a fast lens and are okay with mf, then get them nikon 50mm f/1.4 ais mf.
if you want a fast lens and are okay with mf and want to be ridiculous, then get the nikon 50mm f/1.2 ais mf.
in my opinion, the best focal lengths to have available on DX are:
24mm - 35mm
70mm - 200mm
so if you want to cover more of that area, you might want to try to get something in the 24mm-35mm (the shortest you have is 50mm) or 70-105mm range (the next shortest you have is 135mm).
some people prefer a 35mm lens as their normal lens on a full frame. the equivalent focal length on dx is 24mm. if af isn't absolutely necessary for you, and you would like a wider normal lens, then the nikon 24mm f/2.8 ais mf lens would be nice. but the nikon 35mm f/1.8g af is faster and cheaper and has af. so it would be my choice.
the 70-105mm range would be ideal for portraiture, especially where you don't have enough room to use the 135mm lens.
these will pick up virtually all of the focal lengths you would likely want:
nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6g if-ed af-s vr dx
nikon 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6g ed af-s vr dx
i've neglected other manufacturers' offerings. but i need to get back to studying!
:)
thanks lr. i think i'll probably go with that 35mm f/1.8 and a longer zoom.
this:
nikon 35mm f1.8 G AFS DX Lens
nikon 55-200mm f4-5.6 G ED AFS DX Lens.
that way my range is from 18-200 (albeit in two lenses), plus the fast 35mm for concerts, etc.
comments?
spend the extra $45 and get vr on the zoom lens. you should be able to get two stops from vr (some sources report 3-4 stops). it seems worth it.
i think i'll be jealous of your setup. personally i had to forgo the dx/g lenses--i wanted to be able to use the lens on my film slr. but that lens setup would be great for dx!
it's $80 where i have to get it. is it worth that much?
hrm, kenny boy seems to think so.

I agree it's probably worth it.
You're going to love having a fast lens AND a kickin telephoto! The bokeh, depth of field, and separation you get zoomed to 200 is glorious!
I'm desperately in love with my 28-200. I shoot at both extremes constantly. :D

I need to call Tamron about my 28-200mm zoom lens. I wonder what they will do for me, because I don't want a replacement at this point; I want my money back. Then I can buy the Nikkor 28-200 f/3.5-5.6.
The Nikkor does not have a manual aperture ring! :D So I will not get fucked over by it as is the case with the Tamron.
i still don't know why anyone would want a gelded lens.
a gelded lens is lighter, i guess
i need a camera bag now :(
I would give you mine, nestor, but I think it's too small for all your lenses.
well i don't think i'll carry around all the old manual lenses. just the new AF ones.
what's wrong with your tamron? you just said you loved it a few posts ago...?

> i still don't know why anyone would want a gelded lens.
You've seen the problem the manual aperture ring on my lens creates.
Plus I'm happy with my Fujica and Canon slrs so it's not worth it to me at this point to buy a Nikon slr + manual aperture lenses just so I can share between film and digital. Doing that makes sense for you, but it's not as important to me to reduce my photo equipment the way you do.
> what's wrong with your tamron? you just said you loved it a few posts ago...?
The aperture ring doesn't fully engage the little switch on my d90 that lets me control all the settings through the camera. I have to constantly twist the ring just the tiniest bit clockwise before everything connects and I'm able to take a picture. :( It didn't start doing this until about a month ago, but now it's so bad I am virtually doing this with every shot.
I do love the idea of the lens (being light, compact, and with a massive zoom range) just not this one in particular.
dp: haven't had it out yet, tested out the bokeh on it and i'm really happy with that. i don't shoot nearly as often as i should and i haven't been all that inspired since i came back from england. i'm just happy that i have a great AF setup from 18-200mm and with that 35mm lens my concert shots in the future should be a lot better :)
Nestor: You should do a 365, it forces you to be creative!
I might just do that we'll see about whether I have enough determination
> You've seen the problem the manual aperture ring on my lens creates.
i wouldn't blame the aperture ring. i would blame the manufacturing defect. what i'm saying is that i wouldn't avoid aperture rings just because occasionally one of them might be defective. i would think that most aperture rings work perfectly.
that would be like me avoiding normal hard drives because occasionally they are doa. there will always be a fraction of product that is defective as it leaves the factory. we just hope that quality control pulls the product from the line before it gets distributed.
> Doing that makes sense for you, but it's not as important to me to reduce my photo equipment the way you do.
i'm not saying that you ought to do this. i'm just saying that there's no real benefit to gelded lenses (except maybe for a trivial weight loss).
what! isn't the benefit to gelded lenses that it reduces manufacturing cost? also from a support point of view, having less mechanical/moving parts should help reduce mechanical defects, pushing the problems onto the electrical side.
the end user just gets a product that is potentially less useful to a lay person, or someone who doesn't pay attention / or care whether there's an aperture ring on the lens they spent half a G on.
> isn't the benefit to gelded lenses that it reduces manufacturing cost?
i think that's right. so there are two benefits to the end consumer--they are slightly lighter, and they are slightly less expensive to purchase.
> from a support point of view, having less mechanical/moving parts should help reduce mechanical defects
probably, but i think this difference is trivial with nikon lenses. i bet less than 0.001% of nikon lenses have a defective aperture ring.

The last two. I wouldn't seriously consider the first one as 70mm isn't long enough to make it worth the price for me.
i thought you were all about short (~18mm) to long (~200mm) zooms. there is no such 1:2.8 lens. you'd have to get two separate lenses, of which that would be one, which is why i linked it.
but ok--you don't want a 1:2.8 zoom lens. i kinda do. :D
