camera modification tips

So I remember the db idea about strapping the lens cap to either the body or strap. Maybe with velcro? Not too sure of the details anymore but I remember that db had said something about it.

Here's what I think I'll do:

d80:
In my nikon lens cap there's a place that can be drilled through without disturbing the mechanics of the lid grip. I might just drill two tiny holes there. Here's an alternative though. I just bought the little remote control for my camera. What if I made a small shim that grips the remote control, and attach it to the lens cap? It would be pretty simple to construct and it would be reasonably practical as long as it doesn't interfere with the lens release squeeze. This would also help so you don't misplace the remote. Lastly I'm thinking of either using a strap or a carbiner to attach it to my bag or camera strap when I'm shooting. Velcro probably won't be used, I don't really like the tear sound. It's trivial but clipping would be nicer for me.

If that works out I'd like to make a small shim too for a spare SD card to attach either to the lens hood or the lens cap.

holga:
I've been keeping this under wraps but.. I want to mod my holga to be inside of a stuffed cat, so I can strap it to my hand and call it "holgato". If I can't get my other older digital to work again I'm going to try to mod it into my holga where the film plate area is. I have our oldest ricoh camera still. I think the only thing not working in it is the lens motor, pretty sure the sensor is okay.

go!

> Maybe with velcro?

i thought he was about drilling a hole somewhere and using a cord.

nothing is wrong - what are you scared of?
here's a site that has a ton of holga information, including mods for pinholes, cable releases, aperture fix, and close focusing. I have attempted using 35mm film in the holga and it worked out, I just did not expose them correctly. next up are panoramas!

I'm going to make a couple tilt/shift lenses from the enlarger lenses I bought.
it is a pretty easy thing to do, just getting the distance from the lens is the tricky part. I have one toilet plunger method I'm going to try (much more rigid) then I will also attempt the opaque film bag method (flimsy, more flexible/leeway).

here are a few examples of tilt shift images:

the remote idea sounds cool. i'm always misplacing mine

I should also mention that I don't mean a taxidermy cat! Just a goofy-ass stuffed animal.

I don't have easy access to medium format processing so I think the old camera strapped to the holga might work just fine :)

dp: i used to glue velcro to the outside of my lens cap and then put a velcro strap around my camera strap. that way when you pull the cap you only have to slap it on there!

ah ok :)

ap: I first saw tilt shift on some cars, it was pretty silly looking! the series was the city as toys. I saw it where my photo teacher had his work exhibited. Thanks for the Holga link. I don't want to mess up the internals when doing the mod if possible, so the pictures are handy!

lr: well, I could always revise. I don't have the cat yet.

db: photog pants go in this thread? ;D

ok new plan.

It looks like I should stitch up a small pouch since I have more small pieces than I anticipated.

loose requirements:

-rigid back, maybe a bit bigger than 3x5
-plastic rectangle to attach eyepiece shield/rubber eye-cup
-pocket for remote
-pocket fitting lens cap
-small fabric netting for filled sd cards
-long pocket holding sd cards

gone the way of pdp-backpack? hope not!

here are a couple shots with my new lens that I made out of an old enlarger lens 75mm f/3.5-22, a scrunchy toilet plunger, a lot of super glue, a nikon body cap, and some rigid cardboard.

It is a tilt/shift lens that has a pretty shallow dof. you change the focus area by scrunching the plunger in one direction or another. you focus farther away by scrunching the lens towards the camera. I will put up some pictures of the lens and my camera up tomorrow hopefully. It looks pretty damn ridiculous, and it barely fits on the camera because the camera has a built in flash that sort of overhangs and gets in the way of the large diameter of the plunger.

I am pretty happy with it so far. I need to find a place that I can get on top of, like a tall building or water tower, to see if I can get the effect of the tilt shift images you commonly see of cities that look like tiny models.

so it's like a lens baby?

cool that you made it yourself!

yeah its basically an oversized lensbaby. its not any easier to change the aperture than the lensbaby either.

I think I'm going to do it with a roll of toilet paper and some paper.
