Jesus. This is within my budget. Maybe replace the hard drive. Does IBM have a store on campus? Or is this strictly an online discount with education verification?
don't know about the campus stores... this is just an online discount with very little (if any) verification
and you get vista...sdhc ftw
and bloat ftw
i'd wipe it and install xp pro

if BSD ran seamlessly on these TPs I would hesitate very little to get one.

how does stuff like APM and ACPI work, bluet? sound? wifi? I would seriously consider getting one if 4.1 worked seamlessly.
hahahahha whoa...
seriously...? leather?
i foresee heat issues.
i guess you didn't read about how their world renowned engineers made cooling work with the leather.
i tried to "reserve" one, but i needed an invitation code. :(
Asus has leather bound laptops.
link for the lazy?

since i got rid of my x60s, i've been thinking about a t61. they have a coupon code for 10% off, and it even works on the education site!

booo, huge display! :)
nah, 15 isn't bad. that's a pretty sweet deal it seems.
nice, hope it works out for you and you don't have to return it.
what are you going to run on it, windoze? hardware looks like it could run some alternative os, the atheros is nice.
is thinkpad branded wifi always atheros? it has been in my experience.
i'll load windows for sure (i find photoshop and acrobat professional useful). i might also load freebsd 7.
thinkpad branded wifi is always atheros, i just didn't get a thinkpad wifi.
this post has been archived.

FUCK YES--ATHEROS!
..
why didn't you get atheros? you wanted to meet the specs for centrino or something?
i guess i didn't know, hahaha
i wish you could get them with ralink wifi
i ordered my cousin a thinkpad on friday (6/6) afternoon. i got the linux version (intel gma x3100, intel 802.11abg centrino). its eta was 3-4 weeks when i ordered it. it shipped yesterday.
i chose the free ups ground shipping option. it's coming from hong kong via ups express (1-3 days with morning delivery).
hopefully mine ships this week as well!
what do you mean by linux version? comes preloaded with suse?
yeah! it saves you money by letting you have suse instead of a windows license! unfortunately if you opt for linux, you have to get intel gma graphics and intel wifi.
my thinkpad shipped today! woo!
i still have one qualm with thinkpads--you have to buy a dock to get a digital video output. >:0
i got her linux thinkpad today. suse is kinda fun... and bulky.
maybe i'll get mine tomorrow!
yeah i ran suse for a while on my x60. its so... euro
i got mine this afternoon. it's pretty nice. too bad it's fat like every 15.4" widescreen. it is pretty thin and light, all things considered.
maybe return for 14.1"?
maybe, but i do appreciate the intense resolution (1680x1050).
my thinkpad makes terrible noises sometimes.
also, the grippy rubber on the lid has already worn off on the corners!

TP's suck :(
sounds just like mine, lucas
i put a dent in my thinkpad today. i jumped over a cinder block wall, and my messenger bag hit the edge.
battle scar, no worries
magnesium rollcage ftw, i guess. it only dented in 1 or 2mm.
haha:

hardcore.
i like the laptop, with a few exceptions:
(a) terrible noises come from the heatsink/fan area when not powered via ac.
(b) the screen is poorly calibrated, and i don't have a colorimeter/calibration device.
(c) it keeps switching to 40hz interlaced, which my eyes do not appreciate.
a note on the terrible noises:
Anyways, the CPU deeper sleep I believe is related to the hissing / buzzing that most people are complaining about with their Core 2 Duo laptops. It is related to the different power states that the CPU operates in.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=2175874
it's not an underclocking method. it is under the management option. basically, what it does is run a command before the computer can enter one of the deep sleep states......it's going in and out of those deeper sleep states that causes the buzzing noise. however, it does affect battery life 20 minutes or so....
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=3145857
lenovo forum thread:
http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=R_Series_Thinkpads&thread.id=159&view=by_date_ascending&page=1
intel page on deeper sleep states:
http://www.intel.com/support/processors/sb/CS-028739.htm
follow up!
(a) this problem may be intel's, or it may be lenovo's. who knows? maybe i'll try disabling the deeper sleep modes.
(b) this sucks, but it is an industry practice to ship lcds uncalibrated. i wiped the os anyway, so if there was a profile just for me, i lost it. i'll try to find a calibrator.
(c) it seems that the power manager doesn't bump the refresh rate back up to 60hz once the ac adapter is plugged in. that sucks. but i created my own profile that never switches to 40hz in the first place.
weird. my tp breathes hot air, but it isn't noisy.
also, i still don't have a new battery for my x60.. i think i'll just get an iphone :)
i have a core 2 duo T9300. it's kind of a beast. so i guess when mine steps down voltage considerably, it whines and makes weird noises.
your x60 has a little low voltage core, so maybe that's why it doesn't make tons of noise on battery. it's designed for the low voltage! (it's lovin' it!)
well, it isn't ULV - i have an x60, not x60s. but you're right, it isn't as beastly.
i wonder if i could make the cpu run so slowly that the fan on my x60s wouldn't need to start at all. it's quite annoying
yes, it is time for a new tp!
i'm eagerly awaiting my x200s.
i'm getting the little bro today.
what to name it, though? D:
i'm still partial to penelope (πηνελόπη).

do you sleep with your thinkpad(s)?

Sorry I only have a lenovo ideabook s10. I am pretty sure it's illegal to sleep with it in every state but arkansas.
ok, i got my x200s. it's alright.
ddi think the keyboard on the x60s was better. this one feels shallow (short throw).
i got the upgraded lcd with the higher resolution and improved roll cage. it can be turned up to a brightness level so high that i find it uncomfortable. the viewing angles are awful--the vertical viewing angle is so bad that if i move to see the bottom of the screen with good contrast, then the top of the screen loses good contrast. i can't see the entire screen with good contrast at once.
the lid is not very sturdy. it flexes a decent amount. it even flexes more than bsdlite's lid which was not upgraded.
bsdlite
thinks darkness is his ally
and my lid has a "pouch" and a horizontal rule on the cover <3
We've had a couple of T400/T500's at work in the last few weeks. The quality really is worse than the T61 series. Although still better than most other notebooks out there.
:(
the build quality of the x200s is equivalent to that of the x60s.
i charged my x200s last night while i slept. i've been using it all day, i have over an hour of battery life remaining (at full brightness), and i'm getting tired.
it's pretty sweet that i can charge it overnight and get all-day use from it!

i have joined the tp crowd. just ordered x200s. should be delivered either the 24th or 25th.
damn, it seems the intel turbo memory has pretty bad reviews. if i get it pulled, it may delay the shipment by up to a week. oh well, a week delay costs more than the $50 that having the flash chip pulled is worth. if nothing else, I can use it as a fast linux boot drive.
Intel Turbo Memory is kind of worthless. If you have 3-4GB of memory you'll almost never need it ...
yo fsmart, what are the specs for the tp you ordered?
