kinda stealing dp's idea, but i'm aspiring to build a reliable world-wide nas solution. also, i chose the 800mhz cpu over the 1ghz because this one doesn't have a fan. fanless systems are hot.

building a NAS / HTPC combo in the next couple weeks. not sure about distro but will be running ZFS for redundancy and XBMC for the HTPC functions. need it to play 1080p.

any thoughts? cost of hard drives is a bitch.

i hate the concept of a combined HTPC and NAS but i just don't have the room in my current place to justify standalone versions of each. also, i am pretty comfortable that 9TB expansion capacity leaves me enough runway (5ish years) that at that time i could construct a dedicated NAS with something like 16 bays.

yeah, the hdd cost is the biggest part. i don't have any advice--i don't know much about htpc setups.

... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
Get a solid, fast HDD and you should be fine. Also, I run my HTPC (would-be NAS, but I don't have it connected to my network) on pre-systemd Arch. I have yet to have an issue with HD output on stock hardware. Hardware support is good, and it's generally light on resources. Of course, I don't use a real HTPC player... just mplayer with some BASH wrappers I wrote for simplified use, could easily be controlled remotely.

But YMMV.

going with raid-z2, adding another 3tb drive for 5 total plus ssd, maxing out the case.

again, fuck hard drive costs.

Nice! XBMC never seemed to work properly for me, but it seems like a great interface.
