what's on my plate:
1. build frontend for freeradius in php
2. put dp_net together and in dp's mobilepro
3. get freeradius system up for MSU-CoT
4. build installer and configuration tool for freeradius + openbsd + mysql + php + apache + gui of some sort, probably xfce (once i get this nailed down a bit more i'll post details in tech)
5. profit!
all of these have to do with learning php, perl, and how the openbsd installer works.
other than #1, i'm waiting to get my laptop back so i can start writing dp_net.
Im not entirely sure this works but like every summer I say I am moving back to Vancouver. Whats different this time? I have a plan.
short term:
Keep putting money in the bank.
Go to bicycle school in Ashland Oregon.
Move to Vancouver .
Get job as bicycle mechanic.
Middle term:
Work my way up in the Bicycle industry.
Buy MB C230.
Buy Condo.
Save money.
Start family.
Longer term:
Save money.
Invest money.
Enjoy the joys of family.
So far I have 1800 in the bank. I get payed three times in August, One of those checks goes into the bank account so that is 2600. The other two 200 each + plus all money made in September ( I will single handedly be running the gas station at which I work for 20-25 days) which should roughly put me somewhere in the 3-4k saved.
I have registered and enrolled to the bicycle school in Oregon, however I am on a waiting list so I wont find out for a couple of more weeks what will happen. If I do not get in, I will register for a later date that I am sure to get into and figure some short term plan.
As for everything else... Its kind of what I would like to achieve.

link is awesome!

Check these out!

oh sweet photo gallery on fully loaded touring. thanks for that link!
I'm trying to look up some info on that LeTour but
bikeforums.net isn't loading right now. my first instinct is that it is not worth 200 bucks. but then again, some older Schwinn's are decent. that one just doesn't strike me as one of them.
Craigslist is pretty hit or miss. you can find some nice deals on there but then there's also complete pieces of shit that people are trying to get way too much money for.
if you built up your own touring bike it would end up being pretty expensive. easily upwards of 500 dollars and close to 1000 pretty easily too. if you don't want to spend that much, buying a complete bike is probably the way to go. I don't know much about the selection from different brands, but a middle-of-the-line road bike with eyelets for fenders, mounts for panniers, etc. is what you'd be looking for. it might even be specified for touring. you can look at some big bicycle manufacturers and see if they have anything that looks decent.
Trek, Cannondale, Giant, Bianchi, Specialized, LeMond, Felt. those are what I can think of off the top of my head. if any others come to mind I'll post them. just peruse their websites and see if there's anything under Road or Road Touring or Touring that looks good.

well, sunysb offers a ph.d in philosophy. it'd just be a good place to go if you like continental phil, because they have a lot of faculty who have an interest in it. their program isn't only continental phil, though. as with all ph.d in phil programs, they offer the full spectrum, including ancient and analytical.

nestor, what do you think i do with my degree (m.s. econ; b.a. phil, econ double major, math minor)?
1. ph.d economics
2. mba
3. ph.d philosophy
4. m.s. mathematics
5. private sector
6. become a hobo (live the dream)
i'm asking you because we're in the same field, and you have a lot more experience acting like a grown-up.
i want to be a bum for a while, but i'm scared that taking time off will set me back with admissions committees and potential employers. it seems that good econ programs like their students to have math fresh in their heads, so they are very reluctant to admit someone who hasn't been in the classroom for a couple years. do you know anything about the magnitude of this reluctance?
thanks. :)
it all depends on the employer re: living the dream. finance people probably care, private sector econ might care less. if you want to go private sector in the long run i'd live the dream then go to school, then get a job. admissions people seem okay with 'i was traveling' whereas employers are a bit more prying.
as i'm not in econ i'm not sure of the magnitude of the reluctance that you speak of. i don't think they would be too upset though... depends on the school too.
mba school would care more than econ people, in that most people are looking to switch careers, and being close-minded business people wouldn't be able to deal with travelers.
my dream is to start a boutique private equity firm that only hires philosophy students. travelers and hobos welcome y-yeah
getting an m.a. in philosophy with emphasis in continental philosophy would be fantastic.
which brings me to another question: what should i write my m.s. econ thesis on? i've been working with genetic algorithms for a few years, and the department generally expects me to continue with my work and produce a thesis on the topic. but i want to do something fun.
here's some of my fun ideas:
1. a cost-benefit analysis of the legalization of suicide
2. transvestites as a public good
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
#2 for the win.
do cost-benefit analysis of legalization of drugs
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
That's too productive.
short term goals
1. finish my application to transfer (in less than 24 hours)
> do cost-benefit analysis of legalization of drugs
it's probably been done (many times?)
> finish my application to transfer (in less than 24 hours)
to where? utoronto? :D

scored a job as sys admin with flux in bmt! i start after my two weeks at q2 lapse.
nestor: it all depends on the employer re: living the dream. finance people probably care, private sector econ might care less. if you want to go private sector in the long run i'd live the dream then go to school, then get a job. admissions people seem okay with 'i was traveling' whereas employers are a bit more prying.
as i'm not in econ i'm not sure of the magnitude of the reluctance that you speak of. i don't think they would be too upset though... depends on the school too.
mba school would care more than econ people, in that most people are looking to switch careers, and being close-minded business people wouldn't be able to deal with travelers.
i don't think i want an mba. more importantly, i need a few years work experience to get into a top 30 program. so that's not an option right now.
it seems that econ admission committees will care, and it will vary widely. when i applied in fall 2006, i remember reading in a couple places that if you haven't been in school for a while, you better have been working for the wb or the imf. maybe i'll take some time off, then go to a university and take a couple rigorous math classes, get As, then apply. "look, i still know math!"
i highly doubt i'll try to get an m.s. in mathematics. i'm really romantic about math, and ideally i'd do an m.s. in math just to signal how much of a badass i am. but it'd be really tough for me, and i'd probably risk burn-out. plus, i don't want to take the gre subject test for math. and without it, it's hard to get into very many top 50 programs. plus my math grades leave something to be desired.
i really need to be an m.a. in philosophy before applying to a ph.d program. my grades are good, but a really nice paper would be good for a writing sample, and msu is fairly unknown in philosophy.
so my reevaluated options are:
1. ph.d economics
2. m.a. philosophy
3. private sector
4. become a hobo (live the dream)
nestor: my dream is to start a boutique private equity firm that only hires philosophy students. travelers and hobos welcome y-yeah
do it!
