nestor: i mailed the first installment (~40 pages) to dp for transcription today. dp should receive it on saturday or monday, and you'll have results thereafter.

RTF. I'm not sure how lr writes, but keep all apparent formatting (bold, italic, newlines, indents, paragraphs, caps, etc). That should be fine.

Alright so some technical issues to consider:

Should I do anything to fix capitalization, because it automatically caps after periods, I, and that sort of thing. Dates vary in look, and what in the world is the block period, and how should it be represented? ``- 2/11 4:30pm'' is how you have it sometimes. I suggest conforming to most style guides where times go ``1:00 p.m.''

Should there be an editing phase for grammar? I'm typing it exactly as I see it, except for capitalization.

For now I'm highlighting just a few simple things to be looked at.

-capitalization
-date/time standard
-paragraphs when . . .
-elipses
-grammar/spelling

Oh right, I forgot to address paragraphs, for now I'm just making big chunks with cutoffs on the entry dates.

Hmmm- here's what I think, if lr wants something diff thats fine

Caps I think should be as written. Turn off autocorrect in word.
I'll standardize dates and time, in the meantime do it as written I guess
I think grammar and spelling should be edited. It makes it more readable and errors don't really add much (other than flavour, i suppose).

Are there no paragraphs at all?

hahaha.. this is awesome.

dp> Should I do anything to fix capitalization, because it automatically caps after periods, I, and that sort of thing.

please leave capitalization as-is, just turn off auto-correction.

dp> Dates vary in look

please type them as is. i really want a "raw" transcription. then i'll take it and format them all similarly to save nestor some time. but i do want a version that has journal text as-is.

dp> what in the world is the block period, and how should it be represented?

it's a QED character. please use character U+25A0 (■, black square) or character U+220E (∎, end of proof).

dp> I suggest conforming to most style guides where times go ``1:00 p.m.''

like i said, just type it as-is. i'll decide on a style (i love most of chicago) and make the necessary changes.

dp> Should there be an editing phase for grammar?

yeah. i want a raw version, but i/we can edit grammar. this might be a pain, but can you turn off auto-correction for spelling and type spelling as-is? i'd like a raw version, even with my original spelling. thanks.

dp> -paragraphs when . . . / -elipses

can you explain these a bit more? i'm down with U+2026 for horizontal ellipses--nestor, what would you prefer for indesign?

done

> please type them as is. i really want a "raw" transcription. then i'll take it and format them all similarly to save nestor some time. but i do want a version that has journal text as-is.

Alright, I forced myself to change some of these because they look so different sometimes, so I'll fix those, but they annoy me at times (no comma, no time, and the ominous block period).

>it's a QED character. please use character U+25A0 (■, black square) or character U+220E (∎, end of proof).

alrighty

> like i said, just type it as-is. i'll decide on a style (i love most of chicago) and make the necessary changes.

> yeah. i want a raw version, but i/we can edit grammar. this might be a pain, but can you turn off auto-correction for spelling and type spelling as-is? i'd like a raw version, even with my original spelling. thanks.

sure, i haven't changed spelling as far as i know, i noticed two misspellings but that's mostly it.

dp> -paragraphs when . . . / -ellipses

Oh yeah, so should I just end paragraphs when entries end? that's what I have been doing. I just indent a new line and start on the next entry.

As for the ellipses I'm typing them out like normal, I don't really have a comment except that it seems casual which I don't really mind. After hearing grammar girl's episode on ellipses I've just been typing them as space period space period space period (and sometimes another space when it's a continuation.)

I've been doing double quotes like TeX loves it: ``bye.'' instead of "bye." Word 2007 loves it too.

At times I'm unsure of your termination, as it will sometimes look like you have: ``quiet around',' (it's not very easy to see but I can't tell sometimes when the punctuation is inside or outside the quote), and in a particular context it would change the meaning if it were inside or outside. I guess I should highlight those too. I can normally figure it out but I might not be typing it correctly at times. Usually it's on quotation ends but i think also one or two times in parentheses.

that's cool. i might take them out. but i think you understand my want of rawness in the first script.

great!

dp started on blue book #1 this weekend.

i'll hopefully get started on leather book later this week.

once blue book #1 is through transcription, i'll proof it and send the electronic version to you, nestor. i'll also send you a copy of the journals, so that you can make decisions based on the writing, if you'd like.

i'll be done transcribing the leather book by this weekend. and i'll be done proofing the leather book and blue book #1 this weekend.

i'm awaiting:
black book pgs. 1-150 for proofing
the return of blue book #2 for proof completion

typesetting info:
the final format will be a "perfect bind" with 6"x9" paper (novel size).

i've been reading the chicago manual of style, and will create all of the necessary contents (half title, title, copyright, dedication, epigraph, toc, ... , backmatter).

i hope nestor will still be interested to typeset this in a couple weeks.
