vim works really really well once you get the hang of it. additionally vi style syntax is supported by a variety of applications including but not limited to bash... because of readline vi syntax support.

It's pretty goddamned amazing all things considered.

My biggest gripe is it crashes when you bg the process and forget to fg.

ah well.

I can't code in anything besides vim. a GUI editor other than gvim needs to implement vim-like keyboard shortcuts, or a way to use vim from inside the IDE or something. I suggested this to the company Panic as a feature for their Coda editor and they said it was "interesting" and something to consider for future releases. didn't sound too hopeful, but regardless it would be awesome.

gbd also supports readline vim syntax

there are minor differences across platforms. I don't think anything you'll notice doing regular file editing though. I'm not sure though.

vim has a lot more features and is better for coding. can't code without syntax highlighting!

yeah, I've tried various editors and IDEs like TextMate and Coda. Coda was pretty sweet, but I couldn't do without vi keyboard shortcuts.

Yeah, but I prefer syntax highlighting while editing config files. Digging out parameters within heavily commented out config files is a pita without syntax highlighting. Vi(m) rulez. :)

You know I love Vim. Pair it with Urxvt with a Purple tint with a Puffy Wallpaper like I do at work and it's freakin awesome...

Vim should lose the folding feature. People should learn to write small functions.
