nah not really. well kind of.

I just found myself thinking "if you hate America get the hell out." then I thought about it a little more and my attitude towards people with "I hate America" attitudes is that if you're not doing anything to make it better and you can't appreciate how lucky you are then I would like you to either shut your mouth or leave.

I just thought it was interesting how close I came to the simple "love it or leave it" attitude.

it seems virtually impossible to change anything in a poorly organized republic of 300mil

> and you can't appreciate how lucky you

how is it lucky to live here? there's a plethora of other advanced democracies (and some real democracies, too!)

> I would like you to either shut your mouth or leave.

I'm saving up for the move to England ... I can't make a difference here unless I have corporate backing, lie/cheat, or die. None of those seem too good...

I don't necessarily mean making changes on the large scale, but just being conscious of how your decisions affect others, being a generally good person, maybe doing some volunteer work or pursuing a career that will allow you to help people or make a ton of money that you can donate to cool stuff.

my point wasn't that the US was the only place you'd be lucky to live, but that you should be grateful that you were born in such a fortunate situation.

I just don't like whining unless it's somehow constructive or accompanied by some constructive action or plan.

It's true that people are at their most liberal leaving college. Before the realworld runs into them full force crushing dreams and leaving bodies in its wake. Conservatives are largely bitter old men. It's important to keep some of that idealism from youth with you as you grow, and while that's difficult to do I believe it can make you one of the best people on the planet should you accomplish that task.

At least that's what I believe.
